How Balanced is your FAT?

TODAY’S FOCUS
How Balanced is your FAT?

OK, I know we all know about the importance of Omega-3, you know the 'good' fat, but did you know…..

“The American Heart Association (AHA) says research is showing that omega-3s have the following effects:

  • Decrease the risk of arrhythmias, which can lead to sudden death.
  • Decrease triglyceride (blood fat) levels.
  • Decrease growth rate of atherosclerotic (arterial) plaque.
  • Lower blood pressure (slightly).
Other studies have shown positive effects with the following disorders:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • ADHD
  • Eating Disorders
  • Arthritis
  • Asthma
  • Macular Degeneration

Actually the list is quite extensive; it appears that Omega 3 is vital to our bodies and is an essential component in reaching optimal health.

And did you know that the health benefits of dietary omega-3s are blunted when diets are high in the omega-6 fatty acids that dominate most packaged and restaurant foods and vegetable oils (corn, safflower, soy, canola, cottonseed). OK, so maybe you may take an Omega 3 supplement, but if you are still eating foods that are high in unsaturated fat then you are not doing as well as you thought! So, how balanced is your fat intake? Are you eating the right balance of Omega 6 and Omega 3? Studies show that it is important to maintain an appropriate balance of omega-3 and omega-6 (another essential fatty acid) in the diet, as these two substances work together to promote health.

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center “Omega-3 fatty acids help reduce inflammation, and most omega-6 fatty acids tend to promote inflammation. An inappropriate balance of these essential fatty acids contributes to the development of disease while a proper balance helps maintain and even improve health. A healthy diet should consist of roughly 2 - 4 times more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids. The typical American diet tends to contain 14 - 25 times more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids, and many researchers believe this imbalance is a significant factor in the rising rate of inflammatory disorders in the United States.”

Are you looking for a way to add healthy fats to your diet?

Consider The Mediterranean Diet. It consists of a healthier balance between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and many studies have shown that people who follow this diet are less likely to develop heart disease. It also contains another fatty acid, omega-9 fatty acids, which have been reported to help lower risks associated with cancer and heart disease.

This diet does not include much meat (which is high in omega-6 fatty acids) and emphasizes foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, including whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, fish, olive oil, garlic, as well as moderate wine consumption.

Looks like just taking Omega 3 supplements may not be enough…..Maybe it’s time to give up the French fries!
