Alternative Natural Healing Methods
The Alexander technique is a method of movement and alignment that teaches people to use their bodies more efficiently. It helps individuals improve their posture, let go of muscle tension, and move with greater ease. The goal of this technique is to eradicate such poor habits as slouching and tensing (which can lead to pain, decreased mobility, and other health problems) and replace them with good postural habits. Apitherapy or bee therapy is the use of products of the common honeybee for therapeutic purposes. (The term comes from the Latin apis, which means "bee.") Honeybee venom, bee pollen, raw honey, royal jelly, and propolis are the products generally considered to have medicinal effects. Yup, getting stung by a bee is a therapy and it first started being used for MS Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils, extracted from plants, trees, and herbs, for therapeutic purposes. Art therapy uses the creation or viewing of art to help people discover and express their feelings. Ayurveda is an ancient Indian medical practice that encompasses a range of treatments including medicinal herbs, changes in diet, meditation, massage, and yoga to maintain or restore health. The word Ayurveda is Sanskrit, meaning "science (or knowledge) of life." Intravenous Chelation (pronounced key-LAY-shun) therapy has been a respected and widely used medical treatment for heavy-metal poisoning--especially lead poisoning--for more than 50 years. The intravenous solution of EDTA enters the bloodstream; it is believed to attach itself to metal molecules. It then takes about 48 hours for the body to excrete these substances through the urine. Energy Healing is a broad term for any type of healing that smoothes out, manipulates, restores, or balances the flow of energy in the body. It is grounded in the belief that, in addition to its physical and biochemical systems, the human body is made up of a complex system of invisible energy. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a complex approach to psychotherapy that combines elements from a number of therapeutic methods (psychodynamic, cognitive, behavioral, and Freudian-based therapies among them) in order to relieve physical and emotional complaints resulting from traumatic or upsetting experiences. Guided Imagery is the conscious use of the imagination to create positive images ("healing visualizations") in order to bring about healthful changes in both the body and the mind. Humor therapy is a catchall term for the various ways in which health-care organizations are currently using the art of laughter to treat disease. Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis for self-improvement and/or healing. Actually, you're not asleep when hypnotized, but rather are in a trancelike state of restful alertness. This is accompanied by an extreme openness and receptivity to suggestion. Light Therapy is the use of natural or artificial light to treat various ailments, but primarily to treat depressive and sleep disorders. Myofascial Release Therapy uses hands-on manipulation of the entire body to promote healing and relieve pain. Therapists use the technique to ease pressure in the fibrous bands of connective tissue or fascia that encase muscles throughout the body. Sheaths of this dense and elastic connective tissue weave about blood vessels, bones, and nerves as well, forming an intricate, 3-D web that supports your organs and joints from head to toe and acts as the body's shock absorber. Osteopathy is a holistic approach to the practice of medicine. It emphasizes that all systems of the body are interrelated and that any adverse changes in one part of the body may impair the functioning of other systems or organs. Prolotherapy is a nonsurgical treatment for damaged ligaments that relieves musculoskeletal pain. An irritant solution is injected into areas where ligaments are weak, triggering the body to heal the injury and thereby naturally strengthen the joint. Qigong (pronounced "chee gung") is an ancient Chinese discipline that uses breathing, meditation, visualization, and repetitive physical exercises to cleanse and strengthen the body. Reflexology is a technique in which pressure is applied to specific points on the feet (and sometimes the hands) to promote relaxation and improve overall health. Reiki(pronounced "ray-kee") is a therapeutic technique in which healing energy is channeled, or conducted, through a practitioner's hands into the person receiving the treatment. Shiatsu is a Japanese form of massage therapy (the word shiatsu means "finger pressure" in Japanese). Advocates say the practice promotes health and healing by correcting energy imbalances in the body. Therapeutic Touch is a healing technique in which a practitioner's hands are passed in wavelike motions inches above a person's body. (Despite the name, the practitioner typically does not make contact with the body, although some practitioners do include physical touch.) It is believed that by doing therapeutic touch, the practitioner can break up a person's energy blockages and thus improve health and well-being.
