Anti anxiety Medication vs. Natural Therapy

Anxiety is constant worry, fear, and nervousness. While everyone is familiar with feeling anxiety at certain intervals, people who are diagnosed with an anxiety disorder are overwhelmed with anxiety for prolonged periods, often without reason and find that constant anxiety interferes with their quality of life. Depression and anxiety are often inter-related conditions. Medical treatment for an anxiety disorder commonly includes an anti-anxiety medication and, perhaps, psychotherapy.

Symptoms of anxiety may include:

  • Poor concentration
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Irritability
  • Restlessness
  • Impatience
  • Muscle tension
  • Jaw pain (Often from grinding teeth during sleep)
  • Dry mouth
  • Indigestion
  • Panic attacks

Caused by a variety of factors, anxiety disorders are commonly related to:

  • Stressful life events - Childhood abuse, exposure to violence and extreme poverty can lead to a person's constant feelings of anxiety.

  • Drugs - Caffeine and illegal drugs such as LSD or Ecstasy can cause anxiety in some.

  • Brain chemistry - Some research indicates a chemical imbalance in patients experiencing prolonged and overwhelming anxiety.

  • Heredity - Research leans towards there being a genetic factor involved in anxiety disorders although it is not yet clear whether or not, or to what degree, shared environmental factors may contribute to anxiety experienced in one or more family members. For example, siblings that live under a constant threat of violence often will experience similar anxiety symptoms.

  • Personality disorders - Factors such as low self-esteem or paranoia often contribute to anxiety disorders in certain individuals.

A person weary of the constant feelings of anxiety may seek help from a trusted doctor or therapist. Following an evaluation, a doctor will normally prescribe counseling and an anti-anxiety medication to help ward of the symptoms of anxiety. Tranquilizing drugs such as Paxil, Xanax, Valium, Zoloft, Prozac are among the most commonly prescribed anti-anxiety medications. Each of these medications has side effects, however. Because these drugs are designed to slow brain activity, such side effects may include:

    • Fatigue
    • Loss of coordination
    • Slurred speech
    • Memory loss
    • Dizziness
    • Nausea
    • Blurred vision
    • Mental confusion
    • Mental slowing

Depending upon the dosage, it is sometimes recommended that people who are prescribed an anti-anxiety medication not operate any heavy machinery or even drive a car.

Rare side effects can also include:

    • Hallucinations
    • Rage
    • Manic behavior
    • Aggression
    • Addiction

Most often, an anti-anxiety medication is intended for short-term use. However, some patients require longer treatment, which can be dangerous as there is then an increased risk for addiction to the anti-anxiety medication. Also, withdrawal symptoms can be severe when the medication is no longer prescribed. Anyone who is on anti-anxiety medication for more than 4 months or who feels that they cannot live without the medication or that they need it to cope with daily life is at risk for addiction to the medication and should seek the attention of a medical professional for this concern.

Combining anti-anxiety medication with alcohol, other prescription drugs, or illicit drugs can be extremely dangerous and even fatal. It is important that anyone who is prescribed an anti-anxiety medication diligently researches all of the possible side effects of the medication and follows dosage instructions very carefully. Any concerns about side effects should be thoroughly discussed with a doctor.

Many anxiety sufferers find that holistic health or alternative therapies are just as effective with fewer risks and side effects. Some of those therapies include:

    • Valerian extract
    • Passion flower (Also used as a treatment for insomnia, Passion flower can cause drowsiness and should not be used before driving or operating heavy machinery)
    • L-theanine
    • Massage therapy
    • Self-hypnosis
    • Meditation
    • Yoga
    • Sage herb

With herbal treatments, in particular, it's advisable that anyone taking a prescribed medication for any other ailment first consults with a physician to determine how that drug interacts with the herbal treatment. While herbal treatments are perfectly safe for most healthy adults, some do not mix well with prescription medications or with some specific illnesses.

Regardless as to whether a person opts for anti-anxiety medication or more natural ways of treating anxiety, it's important to evaluate situations and lifestyle changes that may be the underlying reason for anxious feelings. A more holistic health approach is necessary in dealing with such conditions as medications and even natural remedies can only go so far in treating the symptoms of anxiety. To truly be rid of anxious feelings or an accompanying depression, a person must begin to learn about and balance their mental, physical, and spiritual ways of being in order to increase a powerful, healthy living standard that will sustain them for a lifetime.
