For anyone following a holistic health lifestyle, these little green treasures, fresh from Mother Nature’s larder are absolutely heaven sent.

When is a Vegetable not a Vegetable? – When it’s a Fruit!

First off, many people tend to think of avocados as being a vegetable. Well, sorry to disillusion you, they are actually a type of fruit. I suppose if you give them their full name of “Avocado Pear”, then there is a bit of a clue there. But I guess what it really boils down to is that they’re not really the sort of fruit that you would sit down and eat with a dollop of cream and/or sugar. They seem much more at home as a salad ingredient or served with shrimps, or smoked salmon. But what’s in a name anyway? The fact of the matter is that there are good for you and that’ll do for me.

The Many Varieties of Avocado Pear

Avocados originate from central Mexico. They actually ripen after they’re been picked, and rich full ripeness within about 7/10 days. But you shouldn’t keep them in the refrigerator. It slows down the ripening process, and, when you take them out, they go rotten very quickly. One little tip to speed the ripening, if you can’t wait to get your teeth into them – is to put them in a paper bag alongside a ripe banana, apple, and/or tomato – it really works. It’s because all these fruits (including the Avocado too), give off Ethylene gas, a gas which accelerates ripening, especially when trapped inside a paper bag.

Okay, let’s get down to the meat of the matter. Let’s discuss the amazing health benefits of Avocado.

  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin D

  • The mineral Potassium

Health Benefits of Avocados # 2 – Great for Heart Health

We’re so used to being told that fat is the heart’s worst enemy that it may come as something of a surprise to be told that the high fat content in Avocados is actually good for our hearts! What it boils down to is that the fats that are bad for our hearts are saturated fats. They leave fatty deposits inside your veins, which makes your heart have to work harder to the keep blood circulating freely. The saturated fat content of Avocados is however quite small, and far outweighed by the presence of more beneficial fats such as Oleic Acid which accounts for over half of the fat an Avocado contains. The fat content in Oleic Acid is similar to that of olives and olive oil. It is a mono unsaturated fatty acid which has been proven to help in minimising the risk of heart disease.

Health Benefits of Avocados# 3 – Anti-inflammatory – Great Food for Arthritis

Sufferers Avocados contain Phytosterols, and these are essential for helping to control inflammation. It is recommended that people who suffer from arthritis should include Avocado in their diet. They also contain PFAs an abbreviation for Polyhydroxilated Fatty Alcohols, which are normally found in marine plants, but seldom in land-based plants. These also have excellent anti-inflammatory properties.

Health Benefits of Avocados # 4 – Protein

Another of the health benefits of avocados is that they supply all nine of the essential amino acids that our bodies need to make up a whole protein. They actually contain more protein that any other fruit, and they’re high in fibre too. The high fibre content makes the protein in avocados, easier to digest than the protein in beef-steak. If you’re considering becoming a vegetarian or a vegan, they are an essential ingredient for a healthy diet.

Health Benefits of Avocados # 5 – Carotenoids

Carotenoids are normally associated with being found in brightly coloured fruit such as carrots and tomatoes. They are pigments which your body can convert into Vitamin A. They are also strong antioxidants that have been linked with being able to prevent some forms of cancer and heart disease. In addition they also act to enhance your body’s immune system. Although less brightly coloured than some other fruits, Avocados are nonetheless a rich and diverse source of Carotenoids.

Health Benefits of Avocados # 6 – Controlling Blood Sugar

Although the potential health benefits that Avocados have in being able to control blood sugar are still being researched, early signs are very encouraging. They already have a low glycemic index rating which means they are great for diabetics. But ongoing studies into the way that Avocados may be able to influence the way that our blood sugar is metabolized, could be of real significance.

Avocado – An Amazing Super-food

When it comes to the world’s super-foods, Avocados have got to be right up there with the best. They are a rich source of antioxidants, a rare source of plant protein, and high in fibre. As well, as being good for cardiovascular health, and immune system function, they have also been linked with preventing some forms of cancer, helping to prevent gout, as well as enhancing brain and my health.

Indeed, the health benefits of avocados are truly amazing!
