Awareness of Breath

by Dr Yash
(India)

Breathing is the sign of life. Every living cell of our body get oxygen through breath so it is called prana that means life in the vedic health science Ayurveda. The vital sign breathing is important for holistic healthy living also. It is the bridge from our conscious mind to sub conscious. You can move your hand or feet by conscious efforts but you are unable to move your intestine or increase heart rate by your conscious will. Our heart rate, digestive movements, perspiration, secretions of endocrines are controlled by our sub conscious.

During panic you get perspired, heart rate get increased, secretions of digestive enzymes get stopped. We can't change all these events by our conscious mind. So there are two distinct happenings in our body, some are under conscious control while other are not. However Breath is different, it is controlled by subconscious , its rate gets increased when you are angry or frightened but you can change your breath by your conscious efforts also. You can hold it for some time, you can do slow deep breathing or can do it fast by your conscious will. Breathing is governed by unconscious and can be controlled by conscious so it can be used as the bridge from conscious to unconscious.

Yoga the ancient science of mind had recognized it and develop Pranayama. It is conscious control of breath by which you can control your subconscious mind also. Your stress is the product of your subconscious anger and anxieties. You can remove those with the help of breath.

Meditation is the next step after pranayama in the eight fold Yoga. Pranayama will help to practice meditation. Concentrating on your natural, normal breathing is the one type of meditation. It will improve your self awareness. Just relax and be aware of the touch of air while passing through nostrils. Your mind will wander after three to four breaths, you will get lost in thoughts but when you remember again, place your attention at the tip of nostrils again, without any frustration. Wandering of mind is natural,it is its old habit, you can change it with the help of breath awareness

This awareness of breath will help you to keep your mind calm in stressful situations also. Under stress your respiration rate get increased because of adrenalin secretion, you have palpitation and panic attack. In this situation if you are aware of your emotions and breath you can control whole situation, just start deep breathing. Have slow ,deep breath and exhale it slowly. Repeat it till your heart rate is normal, you controlled and change what is happening in your body because of subconscious force. It is power of breath. It is rein of your mind ,use it.
