Biofeedback Definition
Defintion: My Experience: I tried Biofeedback as a child so I was familiar with the technique and was looking for a way to incorporate it into my daily life. It took a bit of research to find a Biofeedback program that I could use at home and wouldn’t break the bank. Most of them are very expensive, but I made a decision that it was important and purchased a computer based biofeedback program. When using the Biofeedback method, the activities of the Autonomic Nervous System are measured with electrodes. The results are then displayed on a computer monitor allowing you to see how certain actions such as laughter, stress and even love can affect your body systems. The monitor provides you with feedback giving you a better understanding of the workings of your body. Once you begin to understand the information you can start to gain control over these “involuntary” activities. Using the Biofeedback program that I purchased I feel that I have been able to re-train or, as I believe, reset my Autonomic System through the challenges and validating experiences incorporated into the biofeedback game. For example by lowering your heart rate while connected to the electrodes you can literally make a ball on your computer monitor gently rise to the sky or you can, by both increasing and decreasing your heart rate, take aim with a bow and arrow and hit a target. Sounds impossible? I suggest you try it; it is truly an amazing experience. Would I do it again? I try to do it everyday. Biofeedback is one of the most helpful things someone can do for themselves whether you are dealing with a chronic illness or not.
