Finger swelling can be somewhat of an unnerving experience to go through, often leading one to ask: dose this truly mean I am ill? The answer is more than likely no. Summer Heat:

The summer sun can have many interesting effects on our body. One of these affects is the inflammation of extremities such as fingers and toes. Heat causes blood vessels to expand, which allows more heat to escape through your skin so you can keep cool. However this expansion can cause fluids to leak into soft tissues causing puffiness and swelling in your extremities.

Tammy Olsen Utset MD, MPH, an associate professor at the University of Chicago explains that this type of swelling will dissipate as you use your hands throughout the day. However, if you notice the swelling is only apparent in your hands and finger, and is acuminated by pain. You should speak with your doctor immediately.

Too Much Salt

Overindulging on salty foods could be the reason your fingers are swelling like balloons at a carnival. Your body likes to keep a balanced level of salt and water. Eating too much salt causes your body to retain water in order to make up for the imbalance. This retention of water can often make your extremities swell.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is a form of arthritis, which can lead to joint swelling in the fingers. You may be able to spot this issue if you notice you are having difficulty slipping a ring over your finger knuckles. Osteoarthritis is usually the result of deterioration of cushioning tissue in the fingers joints caused by age.

Carpal Tunnel

If your fingers experience swelling and a significant decrease in mobility, you might suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome is usually caused by a pinching of the nerves running from the forearm to the palm of the hand. This pinching of nerves usually results in burning pain and significant restriction of the extremities movement.

Raynaud’s Disease

Raynaud’s disease is a narrowing of the arteries. This narrowing of the arteries is usually caused by cold weather or stress. As your arteries constrict your blood flow is restricted leading to swelling in joints and extremities.

Remedies For Swelling:

Rest

Rest can be a powerful remedy when it comes to reliving swelling of the fingers. In many cases finger swelling can be attributed to stress. By resting you give your body the opportunity to relax and distress, which might lead to your fingers deflating.

Elevation

Elevating your extremities can help improve your circulation drastically. By improving your circulation you will be able to reduce swelling.

Exercise

Much like elevation, exercise can help improve your circulation and prevent swelling in your extremities. This improved circulation will help drain fluids in your extremities.

Ice

Ice is more than likely the most common remedy for swelling; it is also the most effective. Ice can help reduce swelling, pain and sourness quite quickly and effectively.
