How to Tweak Table Salt to Actually Help Lower Blood Pressure

loading...

Salt is a cornerstone for any savory meal. It can be used to enhance the flavor of a bland soup or plain nuts, and is also essential in preventing iodine deficiency. However, many salts are full of harmful agents and fillers, and salt in general can contribute to high blood pressure and can be dangerous for those who already have it. Thankfully, there is a way you can make your own, natural celery salt, which is a healthy alternative to store-bought salt.

Salt And High Blood Pressure

High amounts of salt can be found in almost all of the most commonly eaten foods, including:

  • Pork
  • Saltwater and smoked fish
  • Cheese
  • Pickles
  • Soy sauce
  • Breakfast cereals
  • Pizza
  • Pasta sauce

Most people get their recommended amount of salt per day simply by eating these foods, however many of us add additional salt to their meals, which can effectively push our salt consumption above our daily limits. This can cause multiple health problems, the most apparent one being high blood pressure

The reason salt raises your blood pressure is due to the fact that it is incredibly high in sodium and the effect that sodium has on your kidneys.

Your kidneys remove unnecessary fluid by filtering your blood and sucking all of the excess fluid into your bladder, where it is released from your body in the form of urine. To do this, your kidneys require a delicate balance of sodium and potassium to remove the extra water from your blood. When there is too much sodium in your bloodstream this disrupts the balance it has with potassium and reduces the kidney’s ability to filter your blood. This means the extra fluid remains in your bloodstream and increases your blood pressure.

The most dangerous aspect of high blood pressure is that many people are not able to tell if they have high blood pressure. However, if your blood pressure is extremely high than you may experience some of the following symptoms:

  • Severe headache
  • Fatigue or confusion
  • Vision problems
  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Blood in urine
  • Pounding in chest, neck or ears

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms it is advised that you seek medical attention, because if these symptoms are being caused by high blood pressure than there is a good chance that you are at risk of developing a heart attack or a stroke.

Homemade Celery Salt Recipe

Although most of us should avoid adding additional salt to our meals, it’s important to not avoid salt completely as it is a great source of iodine and is said to play a role in preventing iodine deficiency. However, it is important to make sure you are getting the most natural and pure source of salt available and that you find a way to cut down your intake. One of the ways that you can go about doing this is by making homemade celery salt.

When making celery salt you can use the salt of your choosing. One recommended option is Himalayan Pink Salt, for it’s unique taste and high iron content.

Ingredients:

  • Quarter cup of a salt of your choosing
  • Quarter cup of celery seeds

Instructions:

  1. Grind both ingredients in a coffee grinder or spice mill
  2. Grind to preferred consistency, can range from almost powder-like to granulated
  3. Store in a glass jar and label

This not only reduces the amount of salt that you use per meal, but it also ensures that you are avoiding all of the harmful agents and fillers that are commonly added to commercially produced salts.
