The 3-Ingredient Solution That May Work Better Than Chemical-Filled Drain Cleaners
I’m sure you’re aware that your run-of-the-mill, Home Depot drain cleaner is not made of daisy petals and sunshine. If not then I’m sorry for bursting your bubble.
The truth is that almost all popular chemical drain cleaners are full to the brim with incredibly harmful ingredients. So harmful that it is best to avoid them completely.
I know, I know, they are just so darn convenient. Keep listening, you might change your mind.
Dangers of Drain Cleaners
Many of the drain openers bought and sold in today’s market contain high amounts of Sodium Hydroxide (SH). An extraordinarily corrosive substance capable of burning your eyes, your skin and yes-even your lungs. It is also a respiratory irritant and long-term exposure can lead to nasal ulcers and chronic skin conditions.
According to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, Sodium hydroxide can cause chest and abdominal pains if swallowed. If it severely damages the lungs or tissue it has the potential to lead to death.
Wondering how you can avoid using these horribly harmful drain cleaners when you drain plugs up on a regular basis?
Good cause I have an incredibly simple solution. Prevention.
The most effective way to avoid harmful drain cleaners is to prevent excessive build up in your pipes altogether. The simplest way to do this is through a drain basket. Drain baskets can be purchased at most general, hardware, or department stores and look like a mixture between a small colander and a plug.
Essentially the drain basket sits in the hole of your sink and works similarly to a traffic jam. The small holes in the mechanism allow only water and very small particles passage down the pipes. If you see your sink starting to back up with water simply reach down and remove the build of food on the basket. Your sink or tub will start draining regularly again.
Another important tip for prevention is to never pour grease down the drain.
Huh? How come? Because the grease will immediately coat your pipes and you’ll need a plunger or snake to clear them. If you don’t have either of these you can make a drain snake from an old wire clothes hanger.
If none of the above methods tickle your fancy, or you currently have a clogged drain that needs immediate attention, then you might want to try this at-home drain cleaner recipe.
All Natural Drain Cleaner Recipe
- ½ cup White Vinegar
- ½ cup Baking Soda
- 4 cups Boiling Water
- Sprinkle the baking soda down the drain.
- Pour the vinegar down the drain and watch it fizz for five to 10 minutes.
- Chase the first two ingredients with boiling water.
- This recipe works best when used regularly.
How it Works
Baking soda works as the base of the solution. When it’s combined with vinegar it creates a powerful reaction.
I’m sure you remember your fourth-grade volcano project, the one you waited until the last minuted to do. The one where a thick layer of white foam bubbled up over the top of your volcano and spilled down the sides. Well, this recipe works in the exact same way. When baking soda and is combined with an acid, like vinegar, it reacts to form carbon dioxide and sodium acetate.
Confused? Bear with me.
Instead of spurting upwards like your grade-school volcanoes hopefully did, the tough foamy bubbles push down your drain and eliminate any blockage.
Don’t forget! The combination of baking soda and vinegar is a completely natural and non-toxic solution comprised of daily household items. 100% as effective, and 100% healthier for your household. Be cautious in your use of other household cleaning products that contain Sodium Hydroxide, it might be more prominent in your living space then you think. SH is also commonly found in oven cleaners, bathroom cleaners, disinfectants and toilet-bowl cleaners.
