Coca-Cola Sucks Well Dry In Chiapas Forcing Residents To Buy Water

The wells are drying up in Chiapas, Mexico, and indigenous residents are scrambling for water, sometimes having to walk two hours a day for it — or buy it, Salon reports. While a burgeoning population has contributed to the water shortage, the biggest consumer is Coca-Cola, which extracts 1.08 million liters of water a day from the local watershed. Meanwhile, only 1 in 3 residents has running water. 

This is just another chapter in the ongoing saga of how giant soda companies like Coke and PepsiCo are destroying human health. Coca-Cola has been the subject of numerous investigations, with one of the latest being a British Channel 4 documentary revealing how the company is fighting the implementation of health and environmental policies that might impact its bottom line. 

Soda and other sweetened beverages have been identified as a major contributor to the obesity and diabetes epidemics around the world, and at least 10 countries have implemented or are working toward implementing taxes on soda in an effort to reduce consumption and improve public health. But instead of working with these countries, leaked documents show that Coca-Cola is surreptitiously forming alliances with public health professionals and agencies that ultimately undermine the health goals. 

With mounting evidence that drinking artificially sweetened beverages can have significant adverse health effects on you, the soda industry has doubled-down on fighting any type of regulation that would slice profits. What you need to know is that drinking one artificially sweetened beverage a day may increase your risk of stroke and dementia by three-fold compared to drinking less than one a week; drinking just two diet drinks a day can dramatically increase your risk of an early death from heart disease; and consumption of diet soda at least daily is associated with a 36 percent increased risk of metabolic syndrome and a 67 percent increased risk of type 2 diabetes compared with not consuming any.
