Craniosacral Massage: Craniosacral Therapy

I had never heard of Craniosacral Massage until my sister, who was a massage therapist mentioned it. It was definitely one of the more unique alternative approaches I have tried over the years.

Definition:
- Craniosacral Massage Therapy: This is a hands-on healing technique typically practiced by physical therapists, massage therapists , and chiropractors. Craniosacral therapists manipulate the craniosacral system, which includes the soft tissue and bones of the head (cranium), the spine down to its tail end (the sacral area), and the pelvis. They also work with the membranes that surround these bones and the cerebrospinal fluid that bathes the brain and spinal cord. Although the therapist uses a touch so light that many patients don't even notice it, most people report feeling profoundly relaxed after a treatment.

My Experience: While I was seeing my Rolfing therapist she introduced me to a Craniosacral Therapist. She thought it might be helpful in my healing process. This type of therapy is a little bit more on the “healer” side of alternative techniques. What I mean is that it is not a blatant manipulation of your physical self like Rolfing or Massage.

I probably went to about 10-15 sessions. I was doing this while I was also getting Rolfing done. As I stated above it’s better to try one thing at a time to truly assess the benefits. Basically you lie down on your back and by gentle manipulation of the back of your head and neck your cerebrospinal fluid is manipulated and the flow is increased and blockages are removed. Now did it actually do that? I really don’t know but I did leave with much more energy and felt an overall improvement in my wellbeing all be it short lived.

Would I do it again? Yes but not at the same time that I was trying other alternative methods.
