There are three different types of diabetes; Type 1 Type 2 and Gestational. However, according to the American Diabetes Association; ‘Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes”. Diabetes is a problem with your body where your glucose levels rise higher than normal, also known as hyperglycemia.
Breaking Study: Drinking Tap Water Could Increase Your Risk Of Type II Diabetes
What is Type 2 Diabetes
In the case of type 2 diabetes, you will experience ‘insulin resistance’; where your body isn’t producing insulin properly. ‘Insulin is a hormone made by your body to help glucose move from the blood into your body cells‘ states The American Association of Diabetes Educators.
“Insulin is secreted from the beta cells of the pancreatic islets in response to an elevation of blood glucose levels”, says Rorsmen, so higher glucose levels mean more insulin released.
If you have type two diabetes, your pancreas will start making excess insulin try and solve the problem. However, over time your pancreas won’t be able to make enough to make blood glucose levels normal! Resulting in the need for insulin shots, which helps boost the amounts in your body.
According to the Government of Canada; ‘Nine out of ten people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes’, and ‘Over two million Canadians have diabetes.’ These shocking statistics are worth considering, and any way of lowering your chances of getting diabetes is worth a try!
What Can Type 2 Diabetes Trigger
Once you are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, you have to be aware of the side effects it may have on your body.
According to The Canadian Diabetes Association; ‘Diabetes contributes to 30% of strokes, 40% of heart attacks, 50% of kidney failure requiring dialysis, 70% of non-traumatic lower limb amputations and is a leading cause of vision loss’.
Vision loss is a major problem associated with diabetes and ‘The risk of blindness in people with diabetes is up to 25 times higher than those without diabetes’ (Canadian Diabetes Association).
What Causes Type 2 Diabetes
Diabetes is caused by a multitude of different things; being overweight, genetics, race and ethnicity, age, high blood pressure or abnormal cholesterol levels. Try this natural way to help treat diabetes!
However, there is one more contributor that you may not have even thought of! It’s an aspect of daily life that you would never have guessed could be affecting your likelihood of developing diabetes: drinking water!
What’s the Link Between Water and Diabetes?
All tap water in the USA and Canada contains a certain amount of fluoride. The American Dental Association states that: ‘the fluoride ion comes from the element fluorine. Fluorine is an abundant element in the earth’s crust in the form of the fluoride ion’. It gets into our water supply naturally, as water passes over rock formations that contain fluoride, taking on some of the fluorine ions.
However, this form of natural fluoride is not the only form found in our water. In the 1940’s the decision to add extra fluoride to our water supply was made. This added fluoride is related to many health problems that are explored further below.
Fluoride and Diabetes
This study by Fluegge looks at ‘fluoride water levels and diabetes incidence and prevalence rates across 22 states’.
It revealed that; ‘ fluoride could be a contributing factor to diabetes rates in the United States; a one-milligram increase in average county fluoride levels predicted a 0.17% increase in age-adjusted diabetes prevalence’. This is due to fluoride being a glucose preservative, therefore raising or maintaining high blood glucose levels when consumed.
Fluegge also discovered that the natural form of fluoride found in rivers and lakes is actually beneficial for diabetes, but the addition of synthetic fluoride is very problematic for our health!
Other Effects Of Fluoride On Your Health
Effects on the Thyroid
This article discusses why your thyroid needs iodine to function properly, and if you take in too much fluorine it blocks your ability to absorb iodine!
Therefore, your thyroid will stop working properly and have devastating effects on your body and can cause hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism. Read this article to find out more about the relationship between thyroid problems and fluoride!
Fluoride Toxicity (Poisoning)
Fluoride poisoning can be caused when there are insufficient calcium levels in the body; fluoride causes an increase in the bodies need for more calcium!
According to The Fluoride Action Network; ‘Early symptoms of fluoride poisoning include gastrointestinal pain, nausea, vomiting, and headaches.’
It doesn’t sound ideal, does it? Find out how to prevent fluoride consumption below!
6 Ways to Avoid Fluoride
1. Change Your Toothpaste!
Many of our regular kinds of toothpaste have high levels of fluoride. When brushing your teeth, it is easy to ingest some of the fluoride, try this natural toothpaste recipe to achieve bright, shiny pearly whites without the unwanted side effects of fluorine!
2. Filter Tap Water
Buy a filter and make sure to rid your tap water of fluoride before consumption. Especially if you are a regular tap water drinkers, it will lower the amount of fluoride you are ingesting and prevent any unwanted illnesses.
4. Eat Less Processed Foods
All beverages and foods made with non-filtered water are fluoridated. “As a general rule, therefore, the more processed food is, the more fluoride it has” (Fluoride Alert). Find out more about fluoride in your foods!
5. Avoid Cooking with Non-Stick Pans
Non-stick pans have extra fluoride added to them, and this can easily transfer to your food while cooking. Therefore try and avoid buying non-stick pans to reduce your chances of excess fluoride consumption.
6. Reduce Certain Black and Green Tea Consumption
Mature tea plants contain high levels of fluoride, which we all know can cause major health problems!
However, if you are a sucker for tea do not fret! Younger leaves have been shown to contain lower fluoride levels and are higher in antioxidants.
Also, avoid drinking bottled/instant teas as they have been proven to have hardly any antioxidants but still contain fluoride from the little tea leaves they contain.
The health consequences of fluoride are scary and as revealed; very common! Try and minimize your fluoride intake by trying out some of the methods discussed. However, filtering your drinking water should be top of your list! Diabetes is becoming more and more of an epidemic and trust me; you do not want to be a part of it!
