Achieving the Four Hour Work Week

How happy are you with your current life situation, your family, your work, your future? Are you one of the masses of unhappy people facing the daily grind forgetting that life is about living not existing? Well, it may be time for a change…..ever consider a 4- Hour Work Week?

"The rules of reality can be bent. It just requires thinking in different terms."
~Tim Ferris

There seems to be quite a bit of hubbub about author and entrepreneur extraordinaire, Tim Ferris. He wrote The 4-Hour Work Week which was on the New York Times Best Seller list for quite some time.

In a nutshell Ferris's book is about abandoning the "deferred lifestyle plan" where you slave for someone else until you make enough money to retire to a lifestyle of your dreams, one where "you own your own life."

The key to transitioning to owning your own life, of course, is to develop your own income-generating business, one that does not, ultimately, take too much of your time. And a time that you totally own and control, one that can be put on auto-pilot. Sometimes we need a compass to help us find our way and Ferris's book purports to be just that.

Ferris's basic premise is the 80/20 principle. The 80/20 principle is the idea that 80% of your productivity comes from 20% of your time, and the other 20% of your productivity eats up 80% of your time and is usually worthless. Ferris's book revolves around the concept of creating a personal productivity philosophy using the 80/20 principle and focusing on the 20% that really matters.

Ferris uses a simple acronym to sum it all up……

D-E-A-L

D - efinition -- Define the overall lifestyle recipe. It's not what you might think.

E - limination -- "Focus" and "Eliminate Noise"

A - utomation -- Put cash flow on autopilot. This part is the key, of course, where people stumble. It's also the most important part because if automated income does not happen, you miss the ultimate step.

L - iberation -- Break the bonds that confine you in every way. Change your job so that you can work remotely.

But, what really inspired me, wasn't Ferris's focus on techniques and strategies as much as it was on the concept of 'LIVING LIFE.' That is, to consciously act on the desire to fully live life without hesitation or excuses. The difference between Ferris's book and other self-help books is that he puts everything including spiritual needs into a black and white very tangible and digestible format which for a lot of us is the only way to actually apply the changes needed to create a new lifestyle.

Although in some ways Ferris's book can be perceived as a path only for the privileged and well educated, given enough desire and fortitude it can be applied to anyone's life. One just needs to take the time to sift through some of the 'flash' and aggressive techniques suggested by Ferris. I personally was not taken by Ferris's style yet, oddly, I still found myself motivated and inspired to apply a few of the strategies Ferris listed.

Ferris suggests that altering your vision, your way of seeing things is what is needed to shift our thinking from working to 'Living Life!'

Where the book falls short is in how the average person is going to actually make his or her monetization ideas/plans actually happen....you know, actualizing your vision. It seems the book has a plan for the individual who has a basic business design or plan, but outside of that it is like you are free falling.

Why am I recommending this book? Because Ferris's 4-Hour Workweek provides the big picture, inspiration and motivation as well as practical ideas and useful strategies that might just help you shift from your current perspective and help you start living life instead of existing.

Ferris's book provides some fantastic tools to inspire you but what is really needed are the nuts and bolts to create a substantial business that allows you to have a four hour work week.

I can see how combining Ferris's book and strategies with the right tools can help bring you to the next level of success and maybe even Living Your Dream Life.

Combining Site Build It, a web business building tool (the one I use) with the 4-hour work week The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich is a fantastic way to start designing your future and owning "your own life."
