The study, which began in 1994, followed 40,530 adults in the northern part of Japan. The participants of this study ranged from 40 to 79 years of age and were followed for up to 11 years. In this region of Japan, 80% of the population consumes an average of about 3 cups of green tea a day.

Researchers found that people who drank at least 5 cups a day had a significantly reduced chance of dying from all causes, versus those who only drank 1 cup a day.
