It’s a fierce battle that people struggle with every day, but you need to know that you don’t have to fight your food cravings, you just need to get creative with the way you satisfy them.
So, here is a fabulous healthy recipe for chocolate oat cookies to help incorporate dessert into your diet without compromising taste. Yes, cookies can be healthy if prepared a certain way! What makes this recipe so healthy is its complete elimination of all the unhealthy ingredients found in a regular cookie i.e. refined sugar, butter, flour and table salt.
What Makes These Cookies Healthy?
A healthy baked good? There’s good reason to be skeptical. Here are a few ingredient substitutions that make this recipe both healthy and tasty at the same time.
Quick-cooking oats are oats that have been coarsely chopped into small pieces and take a lot less time to cook than regular oatmeal. This flour substitute is a very good source of protein, carbs, and fiber. Oatmeal is also a great breakfast food, so don’t feel bad about having one of these cookies in the morning!
Raw Organic Honey
Supermarket shelves are filled with artificial honey that are loaded with sugar and have little to none of the nutrients that raw organic honey provides. Raw organic honey is a sugar substitute that is a good source of vitamin C, calcium, iron and antioxidants.
If you have a nut allergy, feel free to leave this ingredient out. The cookies will still taste yummy without it.
Those with peanut allergies will benefit greatly from this healthy peanut butter alternative. This food will give you a good dose of protein and help you eat your way to cardiovascular health. It’s good to note that the flavor of almond butter is enhanced by organic cocoa powder and raw honey, two ingredients present in this cookie recipe. No wonder these cookies taste so good!
Make your own Almond Butter right at home!
Coconut oil replaces the butter you would normally find in these delicious treats while still maintaining that buttery flavor. Coconut oil has many healthy uses, but sticking to consumption, coconut oil is rich in healthy fats called medium chain triglycerides that aid in weight loss.
Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
You’ve probably already guessed this to be the substitute for your typical milk chocolate. This substitute is low in calories and contains essential minerals to aid in heart, bone and immune system health.
Himalayan Pink Salt
Choosing pink salt over table salt can help you avoid additives and anti-caking chemicals found in regular table salts. In some cases, Himalayan salt also contains less sodium.
A few substitutions can go a long way. One cool thing about these cookies is that you don’t even need an oven. They’re bake-free. Not only are they healthy and delicious, but they’re easy on the hydro bill!
Bake-Free Chocolate Oat Cookies
Serves: 3 dozen
- 3 cups of quick-cooking oats
- ¾ cup of raw organic honey
- ⅔ cup of almond butter, optional
- ½ cup of coconut oil
- ⅓ cup of unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 and ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon of Himalayan pink salt
- Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Combine the honey, almond butter, and coconut oil in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat.
- Stir in the oats, cocoa powder, vanilla extract and pink salt until everything is fully incorporated and coated.
- Use a spoon or small ice cream scoop to drop mounds of your mixture on the parchment-lined baking sheets.
- Place your cookies in the freezer for at least 15 minutes so that they can set.
- Store your healthy cookies in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer (depending on how hard you would like your cookies to be,), and that’s it! That’s a pretty quick and easy recipe, right?
What About A Healthy Chocolate Chip Cookie?
Some of us have traditional tastes when it comes to our cookies, and there is a healthy way around this craving too! You can substitute milk chocolate chips for dark chocolate chips in any chocolate chip cookie recipe in addition to the substitutes mentioned above.
