I Fought Back and Won

I'm a 52 year old female, my story began Jan., 14, 2002. I had just gotten off work and a girlfriend of mine *along with her husband and some of my girlfriend's family members* my husband and myself decided to go and have dinner together at a little eatery *girlfriend was driving*. So we all finished our meals and headed home, I was riding in the passenger's seat in the front, while my girlfriend was taking us back home, on the way we were struck by a drunk driver, driving on the wrong side of the highway and of all the sides to hit, it was the passenger's side *where I was seated*. I remember seeing the car coming for me and all I could do was try to protect myself, I tried to shield my face from possible flying glass and when he hit, the air bags deplored and damaged my wrist, being that I'm a 6 ft person, the accident caused me to be jammed under the dashboard, which strained every muscle in my body.

The last thing I remembered *was trying to protect my girlfriend's grandkids by picking them up and getting them to safety*, not realizing the damage to myself. I remember being taken to an area hospital, where I was diagnosed with soft tissue damage, severe sprains of my ankles, legs, wrist *still have to wear a wrist brace*. The damage was so bad to my ankles and legs that I was driven home *by a friend of the family* with crutches, I still have to use them, when my legs and ankles become weak. So now, I was faced with losing a job, no medical, no income but my husbands'. After the accident, I went to therapy, was dosed with meds *for pain*, followed all the rules to try to get back to where I once was, but I knew in my heart, I couldn't work with all the damage that the accident caused, the injuries left me seeking disability.

So I did an online application and waited for an answer, a week or 2 later, mail from social security came.....THEY DENIED ME!!!!! Not just once but twice. I went the the doctor disability wanted me to go to and he said 'Ms. I know you were hurt and can't do as you use to do, I'm going to tell you something that you need to know....Disability don't care if you're injured or not, if you can raise 1 finger and point, they figure that you can work.' How can I, when I can't even walk my dogs any longer or walk from here to the store *like I use to*. The doctor told me my best bet was to get a lawyer *who can speak for me* who knows how to properly present my case. IN WHICH I DID!!!!! I had a disability hearing, in which I was ordered to see another one of their doctors but disability screwed up the paperwork and made the mistake of sending me for a psychological examination *they found me chronically depressed and incapable of dealing with any kind of work situation*. The ordeal lasted from 2002, I finally got my first check from disability in the year of 2005....AND SO THE SAGA CONTINUES!!!!
