Interactive Metronome Treatment for ADD
My daughter's biological father used to tell me horror stories about how bad his Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder was. His mom told me the same stories. Luckily, he had outgrown his ADHD.
His toddler son was very similar to the stories. When I became pregnant, I already assumed that it was a distinct possibility that my child would have this condition in some form. My daughter was born and was always very bright and active. She was strong-willed from the beginning, and always into things. This was not the normal toddler "always into things" behavior. This was put hook and eye locks on every door, tie the legs of the chairs to the table, and put everything with any potential to be dangerous or messy well out of reach.
She was five and tested at >99.9% achievement level and was promoted a grade in school. I decided to continue homeschooling her instead. In third grade, she chose to go to school. All I heard about from the teacher and counselor was about her lack of attention and social skills. There was no praise for her academics or what she did right.
I decided to take her to the doctor and see if she did have ADD. According to the Conner's Scale, she was definitely ADD. The doctor recommended meds, but I asked if there was another way. I was referred to the Interactive Metronome. My daughter took 15 sessions over the next 5 weeks. The patient wears a headphone and listens to a metronome beat. They also wear a sensor glove or step on a sensor mat to that beat. They get visual and audio feedback to how many milliseconds they are to that beat. As their timing improves, so do many areas of the brain, including those related to ADD. After she completed her sessions, we then did another Conner's Scale on her, and there was only a trace of ADD in a couple of areas. If she would have been graded on the boys' scale, she wouldn't have been considered to have any traits of ADD at all.
When my daughter transferred schools the next year, the teacher bragged to me about my daughter's good behavior. The Interactive Metronome did wonders for our family. I have used it myself just for general timing and brain improvements, and have used it for my daughter as a booster when I have seen any signs, as her treatment was done three years ago. She has still never come close to the level she was at. I would say 80% of the improvements were permanent.
