Kratom- Herbal Treatment for Opiate Addiction

Opiate use both prescription and non prescription is an enormous problem in this country. It often begins with a prescription given to one buy a physician for some chronic pain condition, quickly the tolerance builds up requiring more opiate based medication (Vicodin, Oxicontin, Demerol etc.) in order to feel better. The sad statistic is that this often leads patients to either abuse their own pain medication, by either crushing and sniffing it up the nose or injecting it with a syringe, and eventually to using illicit drugs such as heroin or cocaine.

In the battle of the drug wars there are some promising new weapons in the arsenal. There are some promising developments in the field of alternative medicine and herbal treatment.

In the search for a way to stop the cycle of abuse, many people are now self treating their addictions and recovery with herbal treatment and a little known plant called Kratom.

Kratom is a plant that is found only in southern Thailand. It is a bright green leafy plant that can grow up to 50 ft tall.

Traditionally this plant is used among native Thai people for years as a means of pain control. As far back as 1897, Idly referred to the leaves and other parts of the plant as a cure for an opium addiction as did Holmes in 1907. In more recent years patients in treatment centers in Australia were given Kratom as a means of combating withdrawl symptoms.

Kratom has often been compared to another alternative medicine “miracle” ibogaine. However it is important to note that ibogaine and mitragynine (kratom) occupy different brain receptors and while Ibogaine is meant to be a one dose fix from addiction Kratom is supposed to be used to gradually help a paitent wean off of the narcotic.

Kratom works because the mu crossover is increased by the presence of opiate drugs in the system. Because of this Kratom may be exploitable in the treatment of narcotics addiction, because it directs binding to where it is needed, automatically regulating the attachment ratio and modulating it towards the delta receptors over a short time. Thanks to this herbal treatment, within a few days, the addict could stop use of the narcotic they are addicted to, and the cravings and withdrawal will be moderated by the binding of mitragynine to the delta receptors in the patient’s brain.

Kratom can be very useful to those people expeieriencing addiction to their prescription pain medications, this problem is a double edged sword, if you don’t take your pain medication you are not capable of caring for yourself . If you take the medication, dependence quickly follows, and the commercial drugs provide very little relief from painful conditions anyway! You become lethargic and even the simplest tasks seem monumental.

With Kratom, patients have reported greater relief from pain with no addictive side effects and no lethargy or mental fog at all; patients and doctors skilled in alternative treatment, and herbal medicine tout this drug as a miracle for both chronic pain sufferers and those people with addictions. This is just another example of how the medical miracles of the future will be found in the plants and botanicals all around us.
