Living on a Prayer
Prayer is interesting although its definition feels as if it is strictly from a religious institution it really is just another form of meditation. Definition:
My Experience: It’s not like I woke up one day and said I think that I should start praying as a part of my healthy living strategy. A crisis hits and the next thing you know you are praying. Well, maybe it is a little more like begging. And, believe me, at this point in my life I was definitely begging. Eventually my praying evolved into a kind of conversation with my higher power, not a daily one but just when the mood struck me. Of course, Prayer is really a personal experience. And I prayed a lot. Did I pray before I got sick? No, and just like most of us when a crisis hits I started praying, what can I say I am only human. Prayer helps me to put things into perspective and takes the focus off myself and to understand that my illness is an aspect of my life and not who I am. It reminds me that I am not my illness. Would I do it again? Yes, and I still do. Do I do it regularly? No, just when it pops in my mind which really can be quite often at times. We all have different relationships with our higher power and Prayer is one way for me to keep that ever present. But I also find value in other paths.
