My Health Story

by Jenny
(Virginia)

Hi, I'm Jenny and I'm 15 years old. As a kid(I still am one but anyways)I had allergies kind of bad, I would get allergy shot although I didn't mind because I enjoy getting a lollipop afterward it somewhat bothered me but that's the worst it got until I reach 7th grade.

When I reached 7th grade starting in November I got Mononucleosis(Mono), not from kissing like a lot of people think you get it from, I still haven't kissed anyone which I'm not embarrassed to admit I'm only 15. Continuing on, I had Mono for 8 months. It was horrible. I was taken out of school because I didn't have the energy to go so I spent my days in the same routine: sleep into 12-1, wake up and watch TV while I ate, study before my teacher came over to my house for that days work and test(Which was hard but I managed to keep As and had an occasional B for the past 3 years.), then silently work on my work with my teacher until I was falling asleep at the table, eat dinner, then go straight back to sleep. Depressing days but my good friends that kept contact with me out of school and family helped me through it.

Then, one day I was still not official told I had Mono until December. The doctors kept telling me it was something else, pretty sure the stress wasn't help me. At 12 that's a lot going on. While giving blood to test to see if I had Mono I passed out..then Bam! POTS.

So, I was then dealing with POTS which was a very foreign thing to me, and dealing with Mono until June. I then, during my long days home slowly learned more about POTS. I looked up symptoms, saw doctors, watched youtube videos. (I'm the type of person who has to know the details especially when it has to do with my health.) I was diagnosed with POTS in March.

I've now had POTS for about 3 years and still daily struggle, but hey things could be worse. And there are a few thing I learn I'll list them.

1.Not to take things for granted
2.What an EKG is
3.What medicines to prescribe for certain POTS symptoms and sinus infections
4.Ways to entertain myself on days I'm stuck in bed
5.AND How dumb drama is

So I just say my advice to those who are sick is your not alone even though it may seem that way sometimes, to learn from it, and to help raise awareness.

So that's my story currently it's summer time but I'm back in school have great friends, and my doctors are working with me.

Thanks for reading,
xox
