Narcissistic Parents Are Literally Incapable of Loving Their Children

There seems to be a problem in society with narcissists rising to positions that can put vulnerable people (and in many cases those who believe they are not vulnerable) in compromising situations.
Narcissistic personality disorder is a when a person has a distorted image of themselves, which usually causes emotional instability. They are often preoccupied with image and the way in which the world views them and always have an exaggerated sense of superiority and lack of empathy.
My argument is that narcissists need to be empowered by others to flourish, and while I am not saying it is a quick overnight fix, if we could educate people on understanding narcissism, then we could move towards less of us empowering their behaviour.
Most people have consciously or unconsciously had experience with narcissists- they are usually very charming, disarming and appear to be caring. However it is my observation that energetically narcissists are usually very cold, they say the right thing, there body language is often very consistent with someone with the right agenda, but there is usually a stillness within their demeanor and a feeling that they give off. Unfortunately to so many narcissists being in the public eye, we have become desensitized to this energy.
Due to their lack of empathy and belief in their own greatness, it is easier for those with narcissistic traits to reach positions of power. This empowers the narcissists as they rely on others to give them their sense of worth, this is dangerous in situations when the victims are vulnerable and this is also why narcissists are attracted to positions such as spiritual leaders, politics and positions in which they appear to be helping others.
Should we become reconnected with our own intuitive abilities we can stop empowering narcissists and allowing them to manipulate those more vulnerable. In this video I speak more about narcissism and 3 areas in which I have this personality type recently.
Healthy Holistic Living Edit:
The troubling truth is, narcissists aren’t always passing characters in your life- many people unknowingly have a permanent narcissistic figure in the picture. Arguably the saddest scenario is when a child has a narcissistic parent.
According to Perpetua Neo, a psychologist and therapist who specializes in people with DTP traits, narcissistic parents are actually incapable of providing the love and care that their children need from them:
“Narcissists, psychopaths, and sociopaths do not have a sense of empathy. They do not and will not develop a sense of empathy, so they can never really love anyone. [They] tend to see children as an extension of themselves and a possession. So rather than saying, ‘I’m going to nurture you so you can grow up to be the amazing person you’re meant to be,’ [they say,] ‘You’re supposed to grow up and do this so that you’re my trophy…There are no emotional boundaries either. So the children grow up not really sure about what boundaries are.”
Unfortunately, the grip of a narcissistic parent doesn’t loosen when their children mature and move away from home. Neo goes on to describe the dynamic of a narcissist and their adult child:
“As the parents grows older and their health starts to decline, their sense of self-esteem becomes really shaky. Then the child grows up, becomes strong, becomes powerful, has more of a sense of self, and it’s very difficult for the parent to watch. So there becomes this unhealthy competition, putting the child down, telling the child they’re fat, they’re useless, they’re ugly.”
According to Neo, children of narcissists often grow up to be people-pleasers, always striving to earn the empathy, care, and affection from other people that they couldn’t quite receive from their own caregivers. And of course many fail to pinpoint exactly what’s off about their relationship with their parent in the first place, which can lead to a lot of confusing expectations for relationships throughout their lives.
Does this sound familiar?
