Oil pulling works!

by Christine Wolf
(Racine, Wisconsin)

I came across oil pulling quite by accident on the internet. I had never heard of this before even though I have tried many other alternative remedies.

Well, at first it was difficult even finding the oil in a supermarket. Most carry canola and vegetable oil but I finally located toasted sesame oil at a Piggly Wiggly store. When I tried "swishing" my first reaction was "yuk" but I decided to stick with it to see if there would be any benefits. One of the first things that happened was an increase in mucous coming out of the back of my throat. Then what I thought was a piece of tooth broke off from one of my bottom teeth. It was really a big chunk of plaque. I also noticed that swishing cleaned the plaque off the rest of my teeth and my mouth felt fresher.

After a few days of oil pulling I also noticed how soundly I was sleeping. The sleep was very deep and relaxing. I also felt more relaxed during the day. My energy level also seems to be increasing and my mind is sharper and skin more radiant. As far as curing a disease I am curious to see what effect the oil pulling will have on my high blood pressure. But in only 3 weeks I have experienced much good because of the oil pulling. I will probably do it for the rest of my life.

sinus infection cured
by: Anonymous

Found a website about oil pulling in the middle of the night. Gave it a try the next morning for a nasty sinus infection that I had for weeks that I had been taking steroid nasal spray for. At that point things were only getting worse hence the middle of the night search for anything to help. My first oil pull with safflower oil caused my nose to bleed within 5 minutes - this was a huge surprise as it hadn't bled in over a year. I stopped as I wasn't sure if this was a good thing or not. Within hours nasty stuff was coming out of my nose and my energy was coming back. Two days later I am feeling so much better and will continue oil pulling.

It seems to be working.
by: Julie

I tried oil pulling once with coconut oil the other day. After that 15-minute session, the toothache I had had for two+ weeks just disappeared! My tooth was so sore I couldn't even chew on that side of my mouth, now I can bite hard foods on it. You tell me if that's just a coincidence.

I'm going to keep with it. If there's no side effects, then there's no harm in keeping with it.

Oil pulling works
by: VB

I can attest to the fact that oil pulling works. I started pulling oil last July at the of my doctor (who does conventional and naturapathic med). Having just completed 6 mos of chemo and radiation therapy for stage 3B cancer, I was drained of energy and my bones took a beating as a result of the treatments. The dentist recommended I have all of my teeth pulled because the chemo had loosened them at the gum line. My doctor put me on oil pulling 2x per day. I can say 1 year later, I have all my teeth (the dentist is in awe becuz my teeth are solid, they are whiter and he says keep doing what I'm doing. He will not need to pull them out). I just walked my 3 miles (which I do 3 times per week) My friends all tell me that my skin looks great and that I don't look like what I've been thru. I use VCO and Sunflower oil alternating every other time.

to Vince - the naysayer
by: Anonymous

The main premise of your argument is that western medicine (science) has all the answers - in case you are unaware they do not. People in the western world still die of cancer, AIDS, have chronic illnesses such as fibromyalgia, arthritis etc... People who go to MD's in the best case scenario get 'cured' of their symptoms in the worst case they die (of course, there is a spectrum) this is not due to incompetence (though there is some of that) but due to the fact that MD's do not have all the answers. The fact is that the efficacy rating for western medicine and Ayurveda (which is were oil pulling comes from) is almost equal - meaning the same percentage of people get cured/get worse/get better/die/etc using their treatments. More specifically to your point of 'not knowing how something works so it can't possibly do so' - in western medicine the same medicine can have different behaviors (these are called side affects) and modern medical science cannot fully explain why some people get these side affects and other do not (decoded - 'We don't know why it helps some people and others get sick from this but take it anyway to see which case you fall in')
The bottom line is this - not knowing how/why something works is a constant in ALL medical disciplines - the human body cannot be so easily decoded. You should however know if something works for YOU - whether it is prescribed by an MD, Ayurvedic practitioner or it is some information on line. If what you are taking makes you look/feel better then why wouldn't you take it? As with most of the naysayers on sites such as these 2 things are clear
1) you have not tried the procedure you are vilifying
2) You do not (or have not) had a chronic condition and tried all of western medicine's 'magic' and have been disappointed by the 'results' (or lack there of)

This is idiotic
by: Anonymous

I will not go into why oil pulling is a myth. This has been covered thoroughly on enough websites.

The fact that you are putting your faith in something that has no valid basis in fact, is an example of the failure of the education system or lack thereof, as it has taught you no critical thinking skills.

All the positive effects you are seeing is due to the ingestion of small amounts of these beneficial fatty acids that are left behind in your mouth after rinsing. This shows that your diet is deficient in these.

People will believe anything that they want to believe, as this site demonstrates. The primary and only real factors that drive good health and skin are: Diet (fruits/veg/EFAs) and exercise.

Giving it a try.
by: Caren

Just found about oil pulling from my sister who is in the alternative health care field. I have a tooth that needs a root canal I've been told. Is constantly aching at this point and is sensitive to cold, hot, and chewing. I can't afford the cost of a root canal so I am looking for alternative healing methods. I tried using virgin coconut oil today for 15 minutes. After reading posts here I will try sesame oil before bed and again in the am instead. I will continue for a few weeks and see if I feel any changes. Will keep you posted.

Just try it - don't wait - don't listen to the nay sayers
by: Anonymous

I have been incredibly blessed to learn of this practice. I got off to a slow start, only doing 5 minutes the first two days due to my over-active gag reflex. However, with just ten total minutes, my sinuses cleared up and all the plaque released from my teeth - completely. I have been doing oil pulling with a variety of different oils for almost 4 weeks. My skin has changed incredibly, and I am sleeping much better.

If you're looking at these comments because you've heard the nay-sayers, I would encourage you to simply try it. I could go on and on with the benefits I've attained in just a short time, but the best testimonial will come from YOU when YOU have tried it for yourself!

Reply to Vince - Does it matter whether we know how it works?

Hi Vince,

Your logic will slow you down somewhat while others get much further ahead of you in the simple things.

There is an old Chinese proverb that says: "Those claiming it can't be done shouldn't interrupt the one's doing it."

I am stunned..
by: Mischabi

My mom told me to try this, so I bought a bottle of Sesame Oil at Henry's and I tried it for the first time this morning. Here are my symptoms: I have three molars that are making me sick. My shoulders are killing me (rotating cuffs?) and I am dead tired from lack of sleep. So this morning I tried my first oil pull and HOLY COW! No teeth or mouth soreness, and my shoulders IMMEDIATELY stopped hurting! Then I got a burst of energy and began cleaning like crazy! My energy lasted three hours and then I realized that I hadn't eaten yet. I just now had lunch and I am going to relax for a bit. I am going to try not to eat for the next four hours and then do it again. How COOL is this?

Does it matter whether we know how it works?
by: Vince

I will refrain from a comment on the validity (or lack thereof) of this practice.
Regardless, I see many protagonist of this practice saying that just the only thing that matters is that it works. Well, there's a flaw in reasoning in that. If we don't know exactly how it does work then we're not sure exactly what is working. It may be that other behaviours associated with oil pulling cause the effects so attested to by its advocates. Until the process is investigated and understood, the process won't be universally recognized.

As an example, an argument could be made suggesting that the old pagan practice of hopping up and down in the air on a broomstick so that the crops may grow as high as one is able to jump was really the cause for a productive growing season. Of course, it is known that this could not be done without the associated hard work that was done on the field before this ritual, however it is fairly certain that the success of the crops were attributed to the success in the ritual.

Likewise, just because oil pulling and all of its associated behaviors, whatever they may be, cause the attested effects, does not mean that the entire practice does so.

In practice, this means that if it can be discovered the cause of the said effects, then you may not have to spend the same amount of time or money associated with the practice in its current form.

If you've made it this far, I would like to thank you profusely for considering my opinion.
Keep an open mind,
Vince

good quality oil
by: Merry

It is best to use high quality cold pressed oil, organic if possible, for oil pulling. Keeping it refrigerated should protect the quality of the oil. The constant change of temperature in a bathroom is not a good environment for the oil. The bathroom is also exposed to many sources of contamination. All personal care products have an antibacterial in the ingredients. You do not want to keep a food you are using to detoxify your body in a location where it can become rancid.

YES! It Does Work.
by: DWG

I'm always in search for alternative medicine that I can try at home. Like millions of Americans I'm not fortunate enough to have health insurance. While searching the web I came upon the practice of oil pulling. I'd never heard of it in my life. But, when you are challenged with so many different conditions, as I am and you know that going to seek medical advice is not an option, you'll try anything even if it kills you-- at least you've tried. Well, am still here so nothing has killed me yet. Anyway, from time to time I have horrible cold sores, wich of course is the herpes virus (many people don't know this). So I read that oil pulling with sesame seed oil right at the onset of a breakout would impede the nasty blisters from forming and cause the virus to go back to dormancy. I had just started a new job and it was very stressful. I broke out horribly. I had forgotten that I had purchased some organic sesame oil to try when the need arose. But, by the time I remembered it had developed into a full blown break-out. So I thought to myself it's too late to try it since the sores had already formed. Surprisingly enough I tried it any way. The results were incredible! After the second day my blisters, that were increasing in number, suddenly took a reverse and started shrinking. Today is the third day and the blisters are crusted over. My husband said I shouldn't write a review until the outbreak is completely over, but I'm so convinced and happy that I've had such awesome results that I just had to tell somebody. And beside its not going to hurt you to try it. It's probably safer than trying the newest energy drink on the market. No one seeks a Doctors approval for that.
Try it!

Thank You!!
by: Michelle

Hi Christine,

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience. I have read several articles on the internet saying that oil pulling does not work and that it is just another alternative medicine scam. Nice to hear people are having positive experiences and truthfully all that matters is that it works. The "how" is not important people tend to forget in mainstream medicine doctors don't always know how or why something works they just know it works!
stay well and healthy
