Is Organic Cat Food Overkill When it Comes to Cat Care?

Organic cat food, is it worth the additional expense?

America loves their cats; dogs are great but it seems that people have a special bond with their feline companions that is not easily surpassed by much else. Organic cat food is just one way of showing the world that we care about our cats, but is it too much?

Really, there is only one clear answer to this question; organic cat food is definitely not overkill. And once you find out what is in your cat's food I think you will agree. What matters is your cat's health, and in light of recent events in the pet food industry it is understandable why some people would turn to alternative methods of feeding their pet.

What Does Organic Mean?

Organic food is food that was grown or raised in a certain way. They lack the hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, and other chemicals that traditionally grown food may contain. This is a great method of healthier eating for human beings but those who care about their pets may also decide to make use of cat food that contains only organically grown and raised materials.

What is So Bad About Non-Organic Cat Food?

"Consumers are being duped into believing that they are feeding their pets healthy foods, when in actuality they are feeding nothing more than inferior meat meals, cheap grains (including corn and soy), fillers, by-products, pesticides, preservatives and toxins.

And with some brands you may end up feeding your pet chicken heads, road kills, spoiled or moldy grains, cancerous material cut from slaughterhouse animals, tissue high in hormone or pesticide residues, and even shredded Styrofoam packaging, metal ID tags and minced flea collars."

According to healthy holistic pet.com these are a few of the ingredients you need to be concerned about with your non-organic cat food :

  • Hormones or Antibiotics
  • Fillers and Artificial Colors and Flavors
  • By-products (not fit for human consumption)
  • Chemical Preservatives (BHA, BTA and Ethoxyquin)

"Harmful chemicals and preservatives are added to both wet and dry food. For example, sodium nitrite, a coloring agent and preservative and potential carcinogen, is a common additive. Other preservatives include ethoxyquin (an insecticide that has been linked to liver cancer) and BHA and BHT, chemicals also suspected of causing cancer."

The Benefits of Organic Cat Food

There are some people out there that don't think that the issues surrounding cat food (or human food for that matter) quite justifies the extra money spent on organic pet food, and that is okay. On the other hand, those who do see that those extra few dollars are justified will find that there are benefits to doing so. Organic cat food just leads to a much healthier cat, including:

  • healthier, more lush and shiny coat
  • healthier digestive system
  • better stool, making it easier to clean up
  • more tolerable temperament
  • stronger immune system and a resulting tougher immune system
  • likelihood of becoming obese or overweight
According to Organic Authority.com, some of the additional benefits you can expect from feeding your cat organic cat food are:

  • Reduction of skin ailments and allergies.
  • More energy and a healthy weight.
  • Fewer digestive disorders.
  • Better overall health and stronger immunity.
  • Quality of life and longevity.

As you can see, organic cat food is just a smarter idea for your pet. The pet food scare is over, but healthy pet treats and organic cat food are important considerations when it comes to overall holistic approach to your cat's health.
