The Chronic Cough

A chronic cough is more than just an annoyance. Chronic coughs typically last 8 weeks or longer for adults or 4 weeks for children and can lead to interruption of sleep and exhaustion[1]. Severe cases can even cause vomiting, lightheadedness and rib fractures.

The most common causes of chronic coughs are tobacco use, asthma, and acid reflux, and can fortunately usually be cured by treating the underlying problem. In the meantime, however, a chronic cough offers a heavy dose of unpleasant symptoms.

  • A runny or stuffy nose
  • Postnasal drip (the feeling of liquid running down your throat)
  • Frequent throat clearing and sore throat
  • Hoarseness
  • Wheezing and shortness of breath
  • Heartburn or a sour taste in your mouth
  • In rare cases, coughing up blood[1]

It won’t be a surprise to you that oranges can help you to heal when you are sick. Orange trees are the most cultivated fruit trees on the planet, and they are used in a variety of products, from marmalades to face masks[2].

An orange has over 170 different phytochemicals and more than 60 flavonoids, many of which have anti-inflammatory properties and strong antioxidant effects[2].

One orange provides 130 percent of your vitamin C for the day, which helps to boost the immune system, helping you to overcome sickness quicker and keep it away in the future[2].

The process of heating an orange kills much of the vitamin C it contains, but it allows us to reap the benefits of the albedo, otherwise known as the spongy, thread-like bundles that are usually thrown away with the orange peel.

The albedo is loaded with bioflavonoids, which support blood circulation and treats allergies, virus’, and inflammatory conditions.

By steaming the orange with salt, the bioflavonoids from albedo are extracted out of the juice and pulp, so instead of throwing them away as we normally do, we can harness the benefits.

Ingredients:

1 Orange
Salt

Directions:

  1. Soak the orange in salted water for 20 minutes
  2. Slice the orange along the top, about 2 centimeters from the top, to resemble a cap
  3. Make multiple holes in the top of the orange by poking holes in it with a fork
  4. Sprinkle ½ to 1 teaspoon of salt over and allow to dissolve into the orange
  5. Cover the orange using its cap
  6. Place the orange into an empty bowl
  7. Put the orange in a steamer for at least 15-20 minutes
  8. Serve warm. Drink the juice and eat the pulp

Remember that this is a home remedy, and should not be solely relied upon to cure your chronic cough. Use it as a safe form of pain relief while also following your doctor’s instruction to terminate your chronic cough at the root of the problem.
