These hearty and delicious nuts are actually not nuts at all. They are seeds of the fruit of the almond tree. Lucky for us, they are available all year around. It is worthwhile to know that even though you can get your hands on almonds any time of the year, they are freshest in the height of their season which is in mid-summer. Almonds are a great addition to sweet or savory dishes.
There are so many benefits that one can get out of eating almonds on a daily basis. Such benefits include, but are not limited to, vitamin E, riboflavin (vitamin B2), manganese, biotin, copper, magnesium, phosphorus, and molybdenum. Even though 1/4 cup of almonds contains approximately 11 grams of fat, 7 grams out of that are considered heart-healthy monounsaturated fats. Almonds can reduce your risk of heart disease, they lower cholesterol, they provide protection against diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
And even the fact that almonds can help you lose weight and keep it off speaks volumes. If you want to learn more about the benefits of this healthy seed take a look at our three part series dedicated to almonds: The Cardiovascular Benefits of Almonds, The Disease-Fighting Properties of Almonds and The Immune Boosting Benefits of Almonds.
Did you know that scientific name for coconut is Cocos Nucifera? Coco means ‘monkey face,’ and Nucifera stands for ‘nut beari.’ They received this name because the three dimples on the hairy nut resemble the head and a face of a monkey. Even with this entertaining name, coconuts are a highly nutritional food. Their milk, meat, juice, and oil can sustain an entire population around the world for generations!
Coconuts are packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber. They are considered as a ‘functional food’ due to all the health benefits outside of their nutritional content. Coconuts help to prevent obesity, improve heart health, improve digestion, and are a quick energy boost. Also, coconuts are trans-fat free, non-toxic, gluten-free, and are hypoallergenic. Other benefits include antibacterial, antiparasitic, antiviral, and antifungal properties.

Medjool date is considered to be the king of all dates! These dates are rich in fiber, protein, potassium, and copper. Raisins are full of nutrients, minerals, and vitamins such as dietary fiber, protein, potassium, copper, iron, phosphorus, vitamin B6, riboflavin, and thiamin. The list can go on and on. Raisins promote good cardiac health, prevent cancer, reduce blood pressure, treat erectile dysfunction, help to treat anemia and help control sugar absorption in diabetics. In our daily lives, raisins can cure fevers, provide relief from constipation and help in absorption of calcium.
This delicious syrup can satisfy anyone’s sweet tooth, as well as boost your immune system! Even though its content is 60% natural sugar, maple syrup is rich in manganese and zinc. Both of these minerals have antioxidant properties and contribute to the reduction of free radicals, which are the source of cellular damage.
If you are not yet convinced of the fully packed nutritional value of these truffles, I am speechless, and that by the way, happens on a rare occasion. I believe that I just proved that this chocolaty goodness is a must have. And you thought that all deserts are evil!

- 3 Medjool dates pitted
- 1/4 cup raisins
