Rolfing

If you have never heard of Rolfing or never tried it, don't put it off any longer! You will thank me afterwards!

Definition:
- Rolfing: This type of alternative therapy is based on the premise that physical and emotional stress as well as gravity can throw the body out of vertical alignment and cause muscles and the connective tissue known as fascia to become rigid and inflexible. (Fascia encases muscle and connects muscle to bone.) These problems can then lead to more stress, illness, and a loss of general well-being.

My Experience: One thing I noticed with my body was the immediate stiffness, soreness, and pain associated with my disorder and with the lack of exercise. I had read a lot about Rolfing and thought it might help realign my body so my structural, muscular, and nervous systems could operate at their optimum state. I do believe that alignment supports healing.

The first step when you begin Rolfing is a full evaluation. You are asked a list of questions pertaining to all aspects of your life and then are given a physical evaluation. Basically you stand nude in front of 36 or so mirrors and the therapist then evaluates your posture and bone alignment. It is a humbling experience, believe me!

Once the problem areas are identified the therapist goes to work. You lie on a table and basically through the manipulation of the fascia (see definition above) and loosening of the fascia they attempt to realign your skeletal structure. Is it painful? At times yes but it’s a good pain.

Would I do it again? Absolutely, so many of my choices have to do with my financial limitations so I can not always continue with something that I feel may be helpful. It makes it difficult to prioritize your health strategy.
