Smoking Marijuana and Effects

Marijuana is often considered to be a safe recreational substance available to human beings. This may be true as several reputed scientific studies consider heroin, cocaine, alcohol and cigarettes far more harmful to human’s health than marijuana. Research is underway concerning the usefulness of marijuana for treating mental and anxiety disorders. Nevertheless, it cannot be concluded that marijuana is a safer alternative for recreation. Smoking marijuana has shown harmful affects on health, memory and brain function. Few scientific researches show that smoking marijuana can give rise to a multitude of health problems. In fact, 36 states has licensed marijuana as a therapeutic drug for people enduring AIDS, undergoing cancer chemotherapy, or infected with incurable and debilitating diseases. Some of the short-term harmful effects of smoking marijuana are: Effects on brain: Marijuana is considered as the root for many mental problems such as, panic attacks, delusions, hallucinations, depression, paranoia and irrepressible aggressiveness. Smoking marijuana has been associated to induce schizophrenia and bipolar psychosis. Short term use of marijuana impairs judgment, perception, thinking and learning. These side effects may last for as long as six weeks subsequent to the last use. Weakens the immune system: According to some studies, marijuana is an "immunosuppressant". The regular smoking of marijuana can weaken the overall immune mechanisms and affects the body’s mechanism to defend itself against infection. Effects on heart: Just after a few minutes from smoking marijuana, a person will see his heart pounding faster and a drop in the blood pressure. Smoking marijuana can increase a person’s heart beat by 20-50 beat every minute. Due to the reduced blood pressure and a high heart rate, the risk of getting a heart attack is elevated four times in the first hour of smoking marijuana, according to researchers. Conclusion: Smoking marijuana can create a lot of physical problems such as breathing difficulties and may deteriorate physical abilities. Remember, smoking marijuana can be harmful for both the body and the mind. Its side effects can be minor like increased appetite or life threatening such as lung cancer. Marijuana contains an active ingredient called delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol or THC which basically impairs the immune system of the body thereby exposing it to a number of health problems. |
