terminated after work injury

by Jessie Cotten
(Indiana)

I was injured on the job in 2006, carried out of the plant in an ambulance. I went through the workman's compensation system, continuing trying to work and go to physical therapy.

After 4 months the workman's compensation doctor took me off work and 5 months later, I was given pretty severe permanent work restrictions. I gave these to my employer and was terminated.

They couldn't accommodate my restrictions. I was told that my long term disability had been denied, and they back dated my termination date so that I lost my insurance. I live in constant pain, fatigue, migraines and experience deep depression.

I was healthy and vibrant before this injury, worked 7 days a week, a lot of 12 hour shifts, came home did my housework, and worked out. Now I can do nothing at all. I try to do things like I used to but just can't.

I applied for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and since I have been sent to some rude and insulting doctors and a very rude psychologist who acted as if I were a criminal trying to steal something just because I applied for SSDI.

I haven't had an income in over a year, so believe me if I could work I would. This is the last thing I wanted to do- apply for SSDI. I kept thinking I would get better, but instead, I keep getting worse. Hopefully I will get Social Security Disability Benefits and soon. I have a lawyer that I got through contacting The Disability Digest.

I don't think the people at Social Security realize how helpless and hopeless you feel having to go to them.

terminated with no income
by: jessie cotten

As stated in my last comment, I was terminated after receiving an injury on the job. They backdated my termination so i lost all benefits, including and most important of all, my insurance. How am I supposed to go to the doctor with no money and no insurance? I have gone through all my retirement money just living this past year. the ltd company won't deny or accept my claim, and now my attorney has requested I see a specialist which is going to cost about 300 dollars. I have been denied my SSDI also. If I could work I would as anyone would. Don't these people realize I would rather be making money? I'm really getting tired of getting denied every time I turn around. I guess it's going to take me continually trying to work and then getting fired for not being able to do the work, or being unreliable on those days when I can't get out of bed. Surely there is someone out there that can help people like us. spread the word around that I would like to use others' stories, to take them to our elected officials and make them do their jobs- to serve and protect their constituents and the constitution!!!!!!

Indiana and Workmans Comp.
by: Anonymous

I live in Indiana also. I was injured on the job in Nov.I was placed on work with restrictions, and after weeks of PT,and not improving, I was approved for an MRI which showed a torn rotator cuff and was not able to work. I saw a Ortho. Surg. the middle of Jan., had surgery March 4th. Because of the long delay before I had the surgery, the shoulder froze. Then I was terminated the day after my stitches were taken out.Now 5 months later I have been sent to a new Dr and told I could return to work-with restrictions although he claims there are no records from by previous doctor or my PT reports and measurements. He put my arm behind my back, which no one has tried to do before and was indifferent when I almost fell to my knees.I was given a cortisone injection although I voiced serious concerns because of my diabetes. I never knew that I could refuse treatment, but now I do. I have requested a different Dr. but of course, was denied. Now a site- nurse will be present during my exams. Oh boy.Another one on the insurance companies payroll. How do these people sleep at night?

disabled people unite
by: jessie cotten

I would just like to add to my comments that i would like for everyone that is going through similar situations to add their comments on this. too many times people like us, are falling through the cracks, with nowhere to turn to and insufficient answers. My state , Indiana is one of the 3 worst states to get injured on the job in the united states. Maybe if we all get together, nationwide, and get our elected officials to do their jobs, and thats procuring rights for all individuals, we can change things.

I encourage everyone you know to add to this page their own comments so i can gather enough information to maybe help everyone in some way.
