The Hidden Dangers Of Hair Colour

by ColleenCrawford

After struggling with a hair colour allergy for the past four years or more. I have learned a tremendous amount of information about the dangers of working with these toxic chemicals. Just recently I have turned my twenty year salon into a “chemical free” environment, as my health began to decline. I am regaining my health back now, and have gathered evidence of the hidden dangers of hair colour to share with you.

Alarming statistics have shown the hidden dangers of hair colour. And most people have no idea what it is really doing to their health.

Some of the active ingredients in colour I will list for you below.

PPD, also know as paraphenylenediamine 1,4 , or diaminobenzene, or 1,4 phenylendiamino.

PPD is an aromatic amine used as a component of polymers, hair dyes, rubber chemicals, fibres, textile dyes, and pigments. PPD is used in the manufacture of aramid plastics and fibres. It is used in almost EVERY hair dye on the market regardless of the brand. Some of the so called “natural” and “herbal” hair colours contain PPD as well. The darker the colour, the higher the concentrates of it.

Even some products sold as henna contain PPD, particularly black ones. So take special care to thoroughly read all your labels before making any purchases.

Studies shown with The National Cancer Institute have proven that 20% of all cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in women are due to regular use of hair colour. The Harvard School of Public Healths epidemiology department discovered that women who use hair colour are also twice as likely to develop bladder cancer as those who don't. According to a study published by The American Journal of Epidemiology, hairstylist who worked with hair dyes for five years or more, had tripled their risk of developing breast cancer. This information alone should stop you dead in your tracks and have you searching for healthier options when choosing hair colours from now on!

Coal tar is another way to darken hair. In fact 70% of hair colouring products contain this dangerous ingredient. It is cheap to produce, easily absorbed through the skin, and can trigger allergic reactions. These allergic reactions can show up, up to 10 years after regular use.

Lead Acetate is one of the most dangerous products found in hair colour. It is banned from cosmetics in European Union, and is listed as a carcinogen in California. It is said to be able to disrupt the function of your brains neurotransmitters.

Other health risks involved with hair colour are:

DMDM Hydantoin it is found in many brands of hair colouring products, and is also in a variety of beauty products. This preservative has been linked to causing immune system problems and has been restricted for use in Japan.

Ammonia is widely used in hair colour, some dyes contain high concentrations of this. The reactions caused by ammonia are, skin inflammation, coughing, running nose, and respiratory problems.

Resorchinol also comes with serious health risks. It is used for oxidation in some permanent hair dyes, and is also classed as a possible cancer causing chemical.

So you can see now why it is so important to consider natural chemical free colouring when deciding to cover up that gray, or brighten your natural colour. The health risks involved can be very serious, and you should think twice next time you have to make this decision. And do what is best for the health of your body.
