I love yoga but I can understand why so many are hesitant to jump on this exercise trend.
The last ten years have seen an explosion in yoga studios across the country and all the consumer products to go with the costly price of joining. No amount of lycra will make you any better or healthier and you don’t need to fork over your months salary to reap the benefits of the practice.
The 5-Minute Yoga Routine That Can Help Restore Thyroid Levels
The origins of yoga have long been debated, but one thing that all sides agree on is that it developed in ancient India and is not simply just an exercise in physical strength, but is a mental and spiritual discipline.
Buddhist and Hindu groups founded yoga for spiritual meditation and have used it as a form of prayer for centuries.
Recently, we’ve seen how Western concerns for physical perfection have adopted yoga as a money making exercise trend.
Is yoga worth all the hype?
Many studies have tried to determine the physical and psychological influence of yoga, and while no definitive answer revealed itself, some suggested that yoga may reduce health risk factors and can possibly aid a person’s psychological healing.
In fact, there are poses from the Asana yoga practice that can help balance one of the most important and hardworking organs in our bodies: the thyroid.
Our thyroid is essential to the way our immune system responds to the external stresses that surround us. The thyroid determines the impact that toxic chemicals can have on every other organ in our body.
In a world with increasingly toxic elements, our thyroids are prone to being thrown off balance. Instead of rectifying these instabilities with prescription drugs, you can help balance thyroid irregularities with these 2 simple Asana yoga poses:
1. Sarvanga Asana
Asana means staying still and sarvanga is sanskrit meaning “entire body”. The sarvangasana is a shoulder stand in which the entire body maintains a still posture.
This yoga position is amongst the best for reverse flow blood circulation and considered a powerful aid in invigorating your thyroid. Because the body is in an upside down position, the pressure effect on the nervous system in the head and throat helps generate activity in the pituitary gland and pineal glands.
- Lay flat on your back with your legs straight out.
- Keep your legs together and slowly bring them up towards the ceiling.
- Placing your palms on your lower back, raise your hips off the ground.
- Straighten your legs and keep your elbows on the ground to support your back.
- Once in this position, your thyroid gland will be pressed towards your chin
- Maintain a stable and straight vertical line and avoid swaying right or left, front or back.
- Your body should be supported on your shoulders and biceps while breathing steadily and deeply.
2. Matsya Asana
Literally translates as swimming like a fish in flooded water, this position is easy to do and extremely influential in boosting the thyroid function.
Not only can this position improve the thyroid function, but it can benefit the nervous system as well.
- Lay flat on your back or in dorsal position.
- Get into the lotus position by crossing your left leg over your right and vice versa.
- Lift your back off the ground and place the top of your head on the ground to create an arc with your back.
