We all know that olive oil is a healthy cooking oil, and is the preferred oil of choice for salad dressings, but olive oil’s health benefits go far beyond consumption. Olive oil has long been used in cosmetics, medicines, and for other non-dietary purposes.

Of course, quality matters. Not all olive oils are the same, or in fact, even olive oil. Because of loopholes in regulations, not every company accurately labels their oils. Many commercial brands of olive oil have been tested and found to be mixed with cheaper oils, including nut oils, which could be deadly to those with severe allergies.

All this to say, do your research. It is also beneficial to use extra virgin olive oil as opposed to other types, since extra virgin is less refined, making it purer and more effective at imparting its health benefits.

Olive oil is easy to digest and reduces the amount of acid in the stomach. This makes it an excellent home remedy for acid reflux and other symptoms of GERD. Of course, this is not a cure-all, and prolonged digestive issues should be talked about with your physician.

Oil Pulling is the act of swishing or “pulling” oil around in your mouth. This removes bacteria and functions much like mouthwash, without added chemical ingredients. Oil pulling can be done with sesame oil, coconut oil, or pretty much any minimally processed oil. Using olive oil can promote whiter teeth, increased energy, and healthier skin.
