5 Keys To Cooking Delicious Brussels Sprouts!

loading...

If there’s one myth that I’ve squashed from my childhood, it’s that Brussels sprouts don’t have to taste awful. If they’re cooked the right way, these little guys can be the highlight of your meal. It isn’t hard to get your kids to like them too. All it takes is a few little tricks.

These 5 tips for perfect Brussels sprouts will have your friends and family begging for more!

1. Roasting Brings Out The Flavor

Roasting Brussels sprouts is the best way to avoid a soggy taste, and to bring out the rich sweetness that they contain (as well as many other leafy greens). Here are some simple steps to roast up a great batch of sprouts:

1. Slice your Brussels Sprouts in half and lay them out on a baking sheet (face down to avoid rolling)
2. Drizzle in olive oil and season with salt & pepper to taste
3. Roast in the oven at 450°F for 20-25 minutes
4. Remove when the outer leaves crisp

At this point, they are already delicious. You’re also free to add any other seasonings after they cook. Squeezing some lemon juice over the top is never a bad idea.

2. Make Sure You Don’t Overcook Them

Brussels sprouts release high amounts of sulfur when they’re cooked for long periods of time. This gives them a very strong, rotten smell that is not very pleasing to the senses. Turning off the heat at the right time can give your Brussels sprouts the soft, nutty taste that they were meant to have. Overcooking can also make them very soggy, which ruins the texture of the sprout.

3. Try Them Raw

This is probably the best way to avoid overcooking your sprouts, because there’s no cooking required! Add your Brussels sprouts to your salad or slaw by shredding the leaves, and tossing them in as you would with any other cabbage. They’re really hard to notice too. If your kids do well with salad but hate Brussels sprouts, this little bit of good-intentioned deception can provide them with the valuable vitamins that they need to grow.

4. Pan Sear to Make Them Crispy

If you want to add a crispy layer to the outside of your sprout, cut them in half and toss them in a pan with some olive oil. Adding garlic or hot peppers to the mix can help infuse the extra flavors into your sprout. Don’t let them sit for too long, though! We just want a nice sear around the outer layers.

5. Try Them Fried

When people hear “fried foods,” they’re usually thinking about the greasy junk that you pull out of a bucket. Frying doesn’t have to be a bad thing, and it can often result in a taste that is very different from roasting and steaming. This is the case with Brussels sprouts. Blanch your sprouts in hot salted water for 3-4 minutes, coat them in milk, and finish by rolling them through seasoned flour and non-GMO cornmeal (or almond meal). Then, toss them in a pan of hot oil at medium heat to give them a nice, golden color. The result will be delicious.

Brussels sprouts provide your body with a number of nutritional benefits. They have anti-carcinogenic properties, they’re low in sodium and fat, and they’re a great source of Vitamin C and chlorophyll. You really want them as a part of your diet, and these 5 ways will get you in on the fun.
