Much like a sneeze, a cough, or even a fever, INFLAMMATION is our body’s response mechanism to an abnormal occurrence or foreign invader, such as injury or infection. Acute inflammation is the kind we experience after an injury, like when my 6th grade girlfriend pushed me off the swing and I sprained my ankle. It was swollen for 2 weeks. The acute inflammation in my ankle was my body’s way of saying “let’s be careful with this area for a while, while we work on repairing the damage.”
Chronic-inflammation however is very different. It contributes to 7 out of 10 of the leading causes of death in the United States. in 2004, Time magazine dedicated the whole front cover to inflammation, calling it “The Silent Killer”. Chronic inflammation is like having a swollen, red, puffy part of your body, usually internally, for weeks, months, or even years. This kind of inflammation has been shown to cause a whole host of complications and diseases such as autoimmune diseases, arthritis, asthma, obesity, premature aging, and even heart disease and cancer.
So what causes chronic inflammation? Some factors are beyond our control such as injury, and infection, but a small brush fire can become a tragic blaze with the right environment. For us, over-consumption of sugar, saturated fats, trans fats, processed carbohydrates, artificial sweeteners and alcohol can fan the flames of chronic inflammation.
So how do we know if we are chronically inflamed? Here are some symptoms:
- Constant fatigue
- High blood pressure
- Ulcers or Irritable bowel syndrome
- Allergic reactions
- Unexplainable weight gain
So how can we undo the damage of chronic inflammation and arm ourselves to prevent it in the future?
Here are 6 Anti-Inflammation Hacks
Dark Leafy Greens – Cytokines are a type of small protein that play a huge role in immune response and inflammation. Vitamin E, found in spinach and swiss chard, helps reduce the amount of cytokines in our body. Research studies suggest that the nutrients found in dark green leafy vegetables may prevent certain types of cancers and promote heart health. Did you know? Greens are the Number One food you can eat regularly to help improve your health and boost weight loss!
Nuts and Seeds – While sunflower seeds are super high in vitamin E, all nuts and seeds contain anti-oxidants. These play an enormous role in the fight against inflammation by repairing the self-inflicted cell damage it causes. Nuts and seeds are a great sources of essentials vitamins, minerals, protein, fat, and fiber. And did you know? Nuts are high in amino acids and healthy fats, which makes them an important part of any vegan or vegetarian’s diet. Convinced now?
Beets – Another veggie super high in antioxidants, beet has been shown to fight inflammation and help thin the blood. It’s also a good source of vitamin C. Beets are a wonderful addition to any dietary need. With their high volume of nutrients, delicious taste, and multitude of uses, anyone can jump right into beets without missing a beat.
Ginger & Turmeric Elixir – I can’t stress enough how valuable ginger as a naturopathic treatment. For millennia, this root has been used to treat pain, swelling, allergies, stomach ulcers, and even cancer and heart disease with positive results across many cultures. Turmeric is another one of my favorites, helping reduce inflammation by easing our immune response.
Ashwagandha – Sometimes referred to as the indian ginseng, Ashwagandha root falls under the category of “adaptagen,” meaning it’s been shown to reduce stress and similar symptoms on the body. Ashwagandha has also been used to treat inflammation due to the high level of withanolides. Fun fact: Ashwagandha means ‘Smell of Horse,’ it refers to the fresh root’s distinct horsey smell, and the traditional belief that ingesting the herb will confer the strength and virility of a horse.
Exercise – Let’s be honest here, some people love hitting the gym, and some people can’t stand it. In this case, I’m not necessarily referring to being a gym rat. Your form of exercise could be an evening walk or some hiking, or maybe even some daily pushups and crunches. Both aerobic and anaerobic exercise have shown to decrease C-reactive protein, also known as CRP. CRP is a marker of inflammation. Even being active once per week was enough to lower CRP in test subjects significantly.

I believe it’s ALL based on our chronic inflammation. I believe if we tackle that root cause, we can eliminate our excess weight, our joint pain, and prevent hundreds of today’s leading diseases. Try incorporating the ingredients above into your diet on a regular basis. Several of them in fact are in our Organifi Green Juice. Like I said, I truly believe in taking on the root cause of our health issues, and that’s why I spent two years formulating these specific ingredients. If you haven’t tried Organifi Green Juice, I highly recommend you check out what others are saying about the health benefits, and it’s delicious taste! For a chance to win some Organifi Green Juice, and a juicer, please leave a comment below about your experience with juicing, smoothies, nutrition, or how you or a loved one have encountered inflammation.
