We all have things we do everyday that become part of our normal routine. And we’ve been doing them the same way for so long that they become second nature.

But what if I told you that there are certain things you’re doing wrong every day that are actually making your life harder? Here are 7 things that you just might be doing wrong, and how to do it the right way.

1. Breathing With Your Shoulders

Let’s start with the basics. Breathing! This is something so mundane that most of the time you probably forget you’re doing it at all, but there is still a right and a wrong way to do it.

Most people try to take a deep breath by opening their chest and raising their shoulders. This is actually extremely ineffective! When you inhale your diaphragm (located at the bottom of your ribcage) contracts and moves downward which allows more room for your lungs to expand.

When you breathe, concentrate on using the diaphragm, almost like you’re breathing into your belly rather than your chest and shoulders. This way you will get a much fuller breath and feel more refreshed and relaxed. (1)

2. Using Too Many Paper Towels

How many paper towels do you have to use to dry your hands after you wash them? 3? 5? More? Think of all the people who use this many paper towels in public restrooms. The amount of wasted paper towels can add up fast!

Just one simple fix can help cut that number in half. After washing your hands, take an extra moment at the sink to thoroughly shake the water from your hands before reaching for the paper towels. It may be an obvious fix, but it’s an important one for the environment!

3. Brushing Teeth Horizontally

You don’t need to be a dentist to know that teeth brushing is an extremely important habit. But even if you brush twice a day, chances are you’re still not brushing efficiently!

Most people when they brush will brush either horizontally across the teeth, or in circles. Studies show that these methods are actually less effective. The best way to brush is called the Bass technique. Start by firmly massaging at your gums in a circular motion with your toothbrush, then pulling vertically to the edge of the tooth, repeating for each tooth. And remember, brushing for 2 to 3 minutes is best! (2)

4. Using too much soap in the shower

Who doesn’t like covering your whole body in suds in the shower, or a relaxing bubble bath? Although it feels good at the time, using too much soap can actually be damaging for your skin. Especially if your soap has a high pH level. And most do. Using too much can cause dehydration in your skin. Applying a minimal amount of soap is sufficient to keep your body clean, refreshed, and still maintain good hydration. (3, 4)

5. Working Without Carefully Planned Breaks

Everyone has a time of day where they feel most productive. It’s easier to concentrate, to stay awake, to feel inspired, and get a whole lot done. The best way to take advantage of these hours is to not take a break right in the middle of it! Plan your breaks outside of your productive window in order to get the most out of your work day.

6. Connecting With Your Boss On Social Media

Today’s day and age makes it easy to stay connected at all hours of the day. Although this is extremely helpful for many reasons, it can also be overwhelming. Keeping your work life and your personal life separate is important for your mental and emotional health. If you get an email or message from your boss outside of work hours, leave it be until you’re clocked back in. This way you can fully detach and recover from work demands outside of work hours, and will feel more able to re-invest yourself the next day. (5)

7. Exercising Without A Warm Up

Many people will skip doing a warm up because it seems useless, or they want to get started on the workout right away. But neglecting to stretch out your tendons and let your muscles get warm can be harmful to your body and increase your risk of injury. Stretching and warming up can also help reduce soreness after a workout. (6)
