What is High Blood Pressure?
High blood pressure (or hypertension) is a condition where the force of blood pumping against your artery walls gets severe enough that it starts to cause damage and can eventually lead to further health concerns. The severity of the health concerns can vary depending on whether a person is dealing with primary hypertension – high blood pressure with no apparent cause – or secondary hypertension – high blood pressure that’s caused by an underlying condition. Consequences of high blood pressure can include dementia, stroke, heart failure, and more. (3)
High blood pressure is a serious condition that shouldn’t be ignored. Because the symptoms can be extremely difficult to catch early on, doctors often have blood pressure tests taken as standard protocol whenever someone comes in for a check-up. The sooner you can become aware of it, the easier it is to address and help manage your high blood pressure.
How Can You Help Manage High Blood Pressure?
If you or someone you know is dealing with high blood pressure, it’s important to consult with a medical professional for guidance on best practices for managing the condition. One thing you can address in your own home, however, is the food you are consuming.
Naturally, your diet has a profound influence on your health. There are foods you can be sure to include in your diet that may help keep your blood pressure in check. Two of these foods are cucumbers and garlic.
Cucumber is a very hydrating, nutrient-filled fruit that can help with high blood pressure. It can do this primarily because of its potassium and fiber content. Potassium can help balance the sodium count in your blood, helping prevent atherosclerosis (build-up of plaque in blood vessels). Fiber can help regulate blood pressure and reduce cholesterol. (4, 5)
Garlic has shown strong evidence of its ability to help manage high blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and a number of other health conditions. This medicinal ability is mainly attributed to the compound allicin that’s found in garlic. (6, 7)
