Michelle’s Journey
Health is a funny thing, you don’t think a thing about it until you don’t have it anymore.
I have learned that opportunities for change come in all shape and sizes in life and that sometimes they may even seem more like tragedies than opportunities. A chronic illness, death or loss of a dream can often be the catalyst to help us break out of that narrow box we all create for ourselves.
I have been dealing with Multiple Sclerosis for the past 18 years and I can still vividly recall what it felt like to have my life change overnight. I went from an Executive Director of a non-profit organization, running marathons, rock climbing, hiking canyons and kayaking to being completely bedridden and staring at a wall for approximately 15 hours a day.
From the first day when the right side of my body went weak and then the left side of my face went numb, I was researching to see what was happening to me. But my physical health kept deteriorating and I couldn’t control it.
Of course, I went to the doctor but I quickly learned the myth of medicine. That is, unless you have a very predictable illness and display those symptoms in a very statistically typical manner, it can be years before a doctor can figure out what is happening to you.
That is why I had to find my own way. My own path to living healthy.
Prior to my illness, I truly believed that I was living a healthy lifestyle. My definition of healthy living was eating well, exercising and having a job I felt good about. But I neglected other fundamental aspects of living healthy. My life was not balanced and I was putting tremendous amounts of energy in one or two areas of my life while neglecting others.
Throughout the years, I have been able to return to my active life and heal myself through living a more holistic lifestyle. One that includes all dimensions of my being; my mind, my body, my spirit and the environment I choose to live in.
