Mustard, as we know it today, is just a bright yellow condiment used on hotdogs and hamburgers. We don’t often think of mustard in its original form and so we know little about its versatility! Mustard can indeed come in a sauce form but it can also come in oil, seed or powdered form, all of which are excellent cooking ingredients!
However, it is not the versatility and flavor that I am telling you about today, so much as the unbelievable amount of nutrients it can bring to your diet!
If you want to learn more about what mustard can do for you, take a look at the following list:
1. Helps with inflammation
Selenium and magnesium are both found in mustard and help to reduce inflammation. Mustard as a regular part of your diet, can aid in relieving asthmatic symptoms like chest congestion as well as relieve arthritis and joint pain.
In the case of arthritis and joint pain, mustard powder or seeds can be made into a paste and applied topically. They can also be wrapped in a thin cloth and placed in a relaxing bath to soothe aches and pains!
2. Strengthens Your Immune System
With its high manganese and iron content, mustard can help strengthen your immune system and prepare you for the cold and flu season!
3. Contains Cancer Fighting Properties
It has been proven that mustard is high in phytonutrients (found in plants), which can help keep your organs running properly. The effects of these nutrients are most present in the gastrointestinal tract and thus can help avoid gastrointestinal cancer. Mustard can help slow down the growth of cancer cells and help prevent them from forming.
4. Promotes Hair Growth
Mustard has many vitamins that promote strong and healthy hair growth. In particular, the presence of beta-carotene, iron and calcium help stimulate the growth.
I would suggest rubbing mustard oil throughout your hair and scalp, wrapping your head in plastic wrap or a plastic bag and then letting it sit for about 30 minutes. Then wash away the oil thoroughly with shampoo. Bonus… this treatment also helps with dandruff!
5. Lowers Cholesterol
Mustard contains niacin and vitamin B3, which can help in lowering your cholesterol and normalizing your blood flow.
6. Helps Relieve Constipation
Mustard seeds are high in fiber and mucilage, which help in relieving constipation! A tablespoon of seeds 2-3 times a day might help you out!
7. Aids in Weight-Loss
Mustard is full of vitamins that can help speed up your metabolism if taken regularly! So, mustard can help you lose weight, AND help keep that weight off!
I’m blown away by all the amazing things mustard can do! It’s a healthy ingredient to add to your recipes and it’s totally delicious! I bet your friends will be wondering what your new secret ingredient is!
Like all foods, you should consume mustard in moderation and talk to your family doctor if any health issues arise!
