5 Top Alkaline Foods That Improve Digestion, Supply Minerals, and Restore Gut Balance

Balance. It is one of the most important things to remember when it comes to almost anything in life. We rely on the sun to give our bodies the vitamin D it needs, but too much sun can lead to skin cancer. Nuts are great because they are filled with healthy omega-3s, but eating too many nuts can lead to unhealthy weight gain. Balance is important, especially with our body’s pH levels.

If you remember your high school chemistry class, pH refers to how acidic or alkaline something is. Our blood needs to have a slightly alkaline pH level to be healthy. We can help keep our bodies at a healthy pH level by eating more alkaline foods and avoid harmful acid forming foods.

Why is this important? Although acid is important when it comes to digesting the food we eat, when we eat too many acid forming foods we force our bodies to to try and bring our blood pH back into balance. Our bodies do this by releasing minerals that are alkaline like magnesium, phosphorus, and calcium.

If we don’t give our bodies these minerals through our foods, they are forced to take it from other places. They pull them from our bones, organs, and teeth. This leaves us vulnerable to diseases and viruses. Scientists believe that cancer can not live in an acidic environment, so there are plenty of reasons to eat a more alkaline diet.

A highly acidic diet is the perfect environment for fungus and yeast. You might find that as your chronic yeast infections begin to disappear, you find yourself with more energy. We should strive to eat a diet that is 60-80 percent alkaline and 20-40 percent acid forming foods.

5 Foods For An Alkaline Diet

Dark Leafy Greens

These include things like spinach, kale, or mustard greens. Packed full of vitamins and minerals to keep your pH balance in check, they’re a great addition to any meal and can be very versatile.

Raw Organic Apple Cider Vinegar

You can use ACV to replace balsamic in your home dressings, or just mix a tablespoon of it with a glass of water for an easy way to ensure you keep your body alkaline.

Try eating more fruits like berries, grapes, pears, peaches, and lemons. If you can’t handle the taste of apple cider vinegar, try some lemon water. Squeeze a fresh lemon into a glass of water first thing each morning for a more alkaline body.

Root Vegetables

Some great root vegetables are carrots, rutabagas, beets, and turnips. Some people may have trouble eating these raw or juicing them, but they are great slow roasted in the oven for a perfect side dish.

You can eat these whole, use them in cooking, or take them in supplement form. Garlic has many different health benefits besides just helping with your body’s pH level. Plus, it’s great in cooking.

5 Foods To Avoid

Here is a list of the 5 foods to avoid, as they will cause your body to be more acidic than alkaline leaving you open to illness.

  1. Sugar
  2. Alcohol
  3. Excessive Red Meat Consumption
  4. Processed Foods
  5. Conventional Grains

An alkaline diet is your best bet in preventing chronic diseases and keeping your body healthy and balanced from within.
