Music plays such a prominent role in people’s lives. It always has, and it probably always will, thanks to the connection people are often able to make through the sound of music and lyrics. Some songs, however, have a much bigger impact than others! The winner of American Idol’s Season 4, Carrie Underwood, wasted no time at all before greeting the world with her first album after her TV show win in 2005 (1, 2). While her album, Some Hearts, had several popular songs, “Jesus Take the Wheel” was obviously an attention-grabbing tune (1).
Who Is Carrie Underwood?
Carrie Underwood is notably the most famous American Idol singer ever to grace the show, there are a lot of things that you likely don’t know about her (3). Born in Muskogee, Oklahoma in 1983, this once-nobody-now-country star first began her career in stardom in 2005 after winning Season 4 of American Idol (4). She released her debut album in the same year and has since won many awards, including several Grammys, Country Music Association (CMA) and Academy of Country Music (ACM) awards (4).
Her song, “Before He Cheats,” which is a simple story about an unfaithful boyfriend, won the artist a Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance as well as a CMA Award for Single of the Year back in 2007 (4). Underwood didn’t stop there, but rather quickly released her second album, Carnival Ride, that reached the top of album charts and even scored number 1 in country hits (4).
Underwood currently lives with her husband, professional hockey player, Mike Fisher, and their son, Isaiah Michael Fisher, who was born in February of 2015 (4). As of August 8th, Underwood confirmed that she and her husband are expecting another child, Underwood stating that “Mike, Isaiah, and I are absolutely over the moon and excited to be adding another fish to our pond” (4).
“Jesus Take The Wheel”
Carrie Underwood has obviously lived a successful and inspiring life as one of America’s best known and well-loved country music artists. “Don’t Forget to Remember Me,” “Wasted,” and “Before He Cheats” are just a few of her most popular pieces, though there was another that ensued a state of religious awareness and hope to many of her fans back in 2005: “Jesus Take the Wheel” (1).
This song tells the story of a young mother who encounters a near-death experience when driving in the car with her baby, on their way to visit her family (1). While sliding across a sheet of black ice, the mother offers her life to Jesus and pleads with him to take the wheel, steer for her, and take them to safety (1). This out-of-control vehicle is understandably a metaphor for a young mom’s life, for as the song continues, she repeatedly requests guidance through the darkest times of her life, continually turning to Christ as the only saving grace (1).
This song became an enormous hit. It spent six weeks at the top of the Billboard, back to back, winning Underwood a collection of awards, including Single of the Year at 2005 ACM Awards (1). These accomplishments were huge for such a new star, revealing not only Carrie’s vocal talents but also her strong lyrics.
Music is persuasive and often impactful, and Underwood’s song was nothing less than this. Don’t forget to give her hit a listen and share ways it has impacted your life!
