Curcumin has been identified as one of the most potent anti-inflammatories found in nature. Ulcerative colitis is characterized by inflammation of the colon. (1) A 2012 study reported that curcumin was effective in treating those with ulcerative colitis when participants were given 2 grams per day for 6 months, as an adjuvant therapy.(2)

The research doesn’t stop there. Scientists from the Institute for Biomedical Sciences at Georgia State University and Southwest University in China have been working on a one-step method to treat ulcerative colitis.  Their main ingredient: curcumin!(3)

Studies have shown that curcumin can decrease inflammation in animals with colitis and reduce the relapse rate of colitis.  The team is currently working to develop a delivery system to get a drug specifically and exclusively to the inflamed region for an extended period of time. Many current drug therapies are administered by IV, require high doses, and cause unwanted side effects.(3)

New study explores how to use curcumin in a one step treatment method for ulcerative colitis

If you or someone you know struggles with ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, or other inflammatory diseases, increasing curcumin in the diet could be beneficial. Curcumin is the active ingredient in turmeric and is common in Indian cuisine, however, the curcumin content of turmeric is only about 3 percent by weight.(4)

Most of the studies use a turmeric extract that contain mostly curcumin, with dosages that exceed 1 gram per day.  It would be difficult to reach these levels just through your food.  If you want the full effect, you may want to consider taking a supplement or extract that contains substantial amounts of curcumin.(4)

Increase curcumin absorption by 2000 percent by swallowing a few peppercorns prior to supplement!

Curcumin is also difficult to absorb into the bloodstream. It has been found that black pepper increases absorption due to piperine. Piperine has been found to increase the absorption of curcumin by 2000 percent!  If you are taking a supplement, consider swallowing a few peppercorns with the supplement. Curcumin is also fat soluble, so consider taking your supplement with a fatty meal.
