The store bought option for getting rid of your blackheads works great. You place them across the bridge of your nose, wait some time then pull them off, taking away with them the deeply embedded blackheads from your skin. But there are drawbacks to using this method to clean your skin. For one it becomes pretty expensive, costing roughly one dollar each. Second, it’s very harsh on your skin.

What Are Blackheads?

But what even are blackheads? Well, blackheads are small bumps that appear on your skin due to clogged hair follicles, that have a black surface, and they can appear on your back, chest, neck, arms, and shoulders. They form when a clot or plug develops in the opening of the hair follicle in your skin.

Each follicle contains one hair and a sebaceous gland that produces oil, called sebum, which helps keep skin soft. That’s why it’s  important not to overuse store bought pore strips, you don’t want to deplete your skin of all it’s essential oils.

Not An Everyday Solution

For a few reasons, it’s not a good idea to use pore strips all the time. For one thing, the removal of blackheads should be followed up with a regular skin care regiment, to prevent them from returning, and because the base of the plug is often still left in the pore. Another thing is that overuse of pore strips irritates the skin, stretching out pores sometimes creating blemishes and even resulting in build-ups of pus under the skin.

It’s totally possible to over cleanse your skin, leaving it without the essential oils that make it soft and healthy. It’s best not to use pore strips more than once a week. Preferably it’s better to use a cleanser with gentle exfoliating acids. It’s even possible to scar the skin by repeated use of pore strips after an irritation has formed.

The Chemicals Involved

Some pore strips contain polyquaternium or menthol and if you have sensitive skin or a pre-existing skin condition, all this does is further irritate the situation. The chemicals in pore strips are abrasive and not meant to be used as part of a daily ritual.

Additionally, the use of pore strips makes you much more likely to have broken capillaries, which is the permanent dilation of superficial blood vessels and are very hard to treat

Home Remedy To Remove Blackheads

If you want to save money and clean your blackheads, all the while not damaging the skin in any way, try this simple home remedy for removing blackheads that some people swear by. Take one tablespoon of milk and place into a bowl. Follow that with one tablespoon of unflavored gelatin, then mix in the bowl until you have a chunky mixture. Microwave the mixture for a short period, roughly 10 to 20 seconds. Then lather on the affected areas, wait 15 minutes and then peel it off. You’ll find you’ve made an ultra effective less abrasive version of pore strips that cost a fraction of the price.

Other Methods To Remove Blackheads

Many other recipes also work including one made from a cup of sugar and a half cup of coconut oil. One made with a cup of brown sugar, a half cup of coconut oil, and a half teaspoon of vitamin E with one vanilla bean. There are many options, but the simple milk and gelatin seem to be the internet’s favorite.

So next time you find yourself battling the blackheads, don’t worry there are many options in the fight. The simplest way seems to be the best and cheapest, so go ahead and make your own pore strips at home.
