Our hormones can play a huge role in our lives; they are ‘very powerful chemicals that profoundly control and affect our body’ according to Dr. Michael Lam, author of the book Estrogen Dominance: The 21st Century Hormone Imbalance

He goes on to explain that the female hormone, estrogen, ‘regulates the menstrual cycle, promotes cell division and is largely responsible for the development of secondary female characteristics during puberty.’

Unfortunately, hormone imbalances are very common in our society. Our diets, chronic stress, and even products we buy from the shops; ‘hormone-laced beef and poultry, pesticides, car pollutants,‘ (Dr.Lam) could affect our estrogen levels negatively.

3 Effects of Hormone Imbalances

These hormone imbalances can lead to adrenal fatigue, estrogen dominance or thyroid problems which can have dire effects on your health and lifestyle.

1. Adrenal Fatigue

The reason adrenal fatigue is so incredibly common in our world is down to stress. It can be caused after ‘a long period of stress or several stressful situations’, people who have ‘driven themselves to exhaustion’ or ‘after extended of severe respiratory infections’ (Dr. Wilson). Adrenal fatigue can also lead to Addison’s disease, caused when the adrenal cortex is damaged. You can read more about it here. Some symptoms of adrenal fatigue include:

  • Low blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia)
  • Depression
  • Low blood pressure
  • Joint aches and pains

. And many, many more symptoms you can check out here.

2. Suffering from Estrogen Dominance

According to ZRT LaboratoryEstrogen dominance refers to an excess of estrogen when progesterone levels are inadequate.‘ This excess estrogen can cause;

  • Water retention
  • Breast tenderness
  • PMS
  • Mood swings
  • Depression
  • Loss of libido’ (John Lee, MD)

In Dr. Lam’s article, he gives an example of a woman called Jane who eventually suffers from all of the dangerous conditions which estrogen dominance can cause, including cancer. He says that; ‘Jane had been bathing in a sea of estrogen for 40 years without knowing it.’

So if you are feeling a lot or even a few of the above symptoms then ask your doctor to see what they think. Then give some of our recommended essential oils listed below a try!

3. Thyroid Problems

The American Thyroid Association say that ‘The thyroid’s job is to make thyroid hormones, which are secreted into the blood and then carried to every tissue in the body.‘ So if your thyroid is not functioning properly it can affect many different organs.

According to the Thyroid Foundation of Canada,About 200 million people in the world have some form of thyroid disease. That’s a lot of people!  They say that ‘There are many types of thyroid disease. However, the main conditions present in most thyroid illnesses are hypothyroidism (thyroid under activity) and hyperthyroidism (thyroid over activity)‘.

Both main types of thyroid disease have slightly ddifferent symptoms, some of them I will list below.

  • Weak, slow heartbeat
  • Muscular weakness and constant fatigue
  • Sensitivity to cold

  • Weight loss in spite of increased appetite
  • Restlessness, anxiety, and sleeplessness
  • Profuse sweating and heat intolerance

Both have many more symptoms you can find through the Thyroid Foundation of Canada link above! If you are wondering whether prescriptions are the only way to combat these three problems then you are wrong!

In this study, a research team from Chiba University Graduate School of Medicine in Japan concluded that “lavender aromatherapy has relaxation effects and may have beneficial acute effects on coronary circulation and can improve circulation”. Considering lavender oil helps with sleep and relaxation it is a great way to help with the symptoms of both adrenal fatigue and estrogen imbalance.
