Food is a necessity of life. It sustains us and it’s the building block to different processes our body undergoes to keep it running smoothly. We know that what we eat can have negative effects as well. If we eat the wrong things we can experience anything from weight gain to disease. But did you ever think that the foods you eat could be affecting your mood?

There are foods or food additives that can have adverse affects on our nervous system. This could leave you feeling depressed, overly tired, anxious, or irritable. And it doesn’t just happen when you overindulge in these foods, it can happen with just a small amount.

Foods That Cause Bad Moods

Here is a list of the 7 common food additives that can hijack your mood and leave you feeling less than happy.

White Flour

White flour is not known for being healthy, that’s true. But it isn’t enough to simply avoid eating white bread from the grocery store. Bleached white flour can now be found in other foods as an additive. It’s commonly used in salad dressings and soups as a thickening agent.

Besides having no nutritional value whatsoever, it raises the glucose levels in your blood. Even just a small amount can spike your blood sugar changing your mood for the worst. You could feel irritable and hungry, even though you have just finished eating.

Food Dye FD&C Red 40

This is one of the most commonly used dyes by the food industry and its only purpose is to make food and drink look more appealing and tasty. This food can be found in sport drinks, juices, cereals, sodas and even over the counter medication. Researchers have found that this dye could cause hypersensitivity and/or ADHD in children and adults alike.

Hydrogenated Oils

Hydrogenated oils are oils that are highly processed and used as preservatives. They can increase the shelf life of products by days and even months. Hydrogenated oils create trans fats in products and this is the worst fat for your body. It increases your cholesterol levels while your system is thrown into overdrive to simply try and digest it.

Hydrogenated oils and trans fat leads to unhealthy weight gain in those who consume these products frequently. This can leave a person moody with their brain in a constant haze, unable to think clearly throughout the day.

Aspartame

This is an additive used in sugar-free products that are becoming very popular all over the country. People might believe they are making the healthy choice by avoiding sugar, but this chemical is actually more toxic. Aspartame has been linked to headaches, weight gain, and seizures in people and should be avoided at all costs.

Food Dye FD&C Yellow 5

Another common food dye used by the food industry, it can be found in cookies, sodas, cereals, bread, ice cream, and even gum. If you ever see a processed food item that looks almost neon and brighter than the sun, this dye is most likely the reason why. Yellow 5 has been known to cause asthma, nausea, and mood disorders such as anxiety or depression.

Monosodium Glutamate

More commonly known as MSG, this additive is used in many pre-packaged foods to enhance their flavor. MSG is also used as a preservative, and can be found in a wide range of products. It is commonly found in potato chips, easy dinner mixes like Hamburger Helper, frozen meals, “ethnic” foods like Chinese noodles and sauces, Mexican foods, seasoned salts, packaged nuts, and soups.

Consuming even small amounts of MSG can lead to dizziness, nausea, weakness, and feelings of anxiety. It is hard to know for sure what foods contain MSG as the FDA does not require it to be labeled in the list of ingredients. To be sure, check to see if the product you’re buying declares itself to be MSG free.

Sugar

The big, bad additive that is in almost every food and has created some of the worst health problems in this country. From tomato sauces and canned vegetables to sports drinks and cereals, it’s everywhere. It hides by using names like dextrose, fructose, corn syrup, sorbitol, xylitol, lactose, and sucrose.

Foods that are high in sugar can cause diabetes, suppression of your immune system, thyroid dysfunction, hypoglycemia, depression, not to mention obesity. The less sugar you consume, the better so aim for no more that 12 teaspoons of it a day.

These are the secret ingredients that could be contributing to your mood swings and lethargy. Take charge and cut these products out to live your life as your true self.
