Dr. Tariq Abdullah, M.D. published an article in the JNMA in 2000 that recommended a combination of Echinacea and garlic for the cold and flu season. In his paper, Dr. Abdullah also mentions the positive effect garlic has on the herpes simplex virus. (2)
Dr. Abdullah suggests that people who use garlic for antiviral benefits should eat one teaspoon of fresh minced garlic mixed with raw honey as a preventative treatment. With the first sign of infection, Dr. Abdullah recommended eating two teaspoons of raw garlic with honey daily. He suggests holding the garlic in your mouth as long as possible before swallowing but cautions people that garlic is hot when chewed raw. (2)
Another option is to make a garlic bath. Peel and chop one bulb of garlic and add it to the bathtub. Run hot water over the garlic and then allow the water to cool to room temperature. The level of the water should be deep enough to submerge the genital or mouth region. Sit for 20 minutes. (1)
You can also cut a garlic clove open and gently press the clove on the cold sore. Repeat throughout the day using a new garlic clove each time. (3)
