How to Grow Your Own Ginger
There’s a common misconception that ginger is 100% a root. It’s actually a rhizome. Think of it as an underground stem that digs in by sending roots and pops above the soil-line with shoots.
This is why it’s so easy to grow ginger: each little knob of ginger has the potential to be the foundation of an entirely new ginger plant and rhizome.
Ok, now here’s what you need to look out for when you’re buying ginger to start a ginger plant. Ideally, you’d want a ginger root that already has a rhizome sprouting out of it.
However, most produce clerks and managers are instructed to cut these off to make their product look fresher. Instead, look for ginger pieces that already have tips that look like something’s about to grow out of them
Once you’ve selected your piece, cut off the parts that look like they’re about to start a rhizome because they’re the key to growing new ginger plants.

Now you need to do some prep work.
Ginger requires very little care to actually grow, you just need to give it the right conditions to thrive. Since it’s a tropical plant, it need to enjoy warm temperatures and humid environments.
If you’re living far away from the Equator, don’t worry. Steamy bathrooms and kitchens are the perfect home environment to grow ginger in.
When you plant ginger, make sure its rhizome is actually looking up so it has room to grow. Make sure the pot you plant it has good nutrient-rich soil. Other than that, make sure the soil does not dry out and you should be good to go
After 10 months, you should be able to harvest the plant. Be sure to save the rhizome for your next batch. Store your harvested ginger in the crisp drawer.

How to Grow Your Own Garlic
Although garlic lacks its own rhizome, it’s still really easy to plant and harvest it in your own home. Instead of looking for a potential spot for a rhizome, all you really have to do with garlic is wait.
If left alone, garlic inevitably starts growing its own little green sprout. Normally produce clerks will remove them as soon as they see them.
When planting garlic, choose the largest plant (you can use the others to cook). Simply place them underneath 3 inches of soil. Make sure the soil stays moist but don’t overwater! Excess water can cause the garlic to rot prematurely.
Another detail: the best time to being growing garlic is around October. It should be ready to harvest by summer, when its leaves turn yellow.
After harvesting garlic, make sure you store it in a dark cool place to prevent mold from growing on it. It should last for about 4 months.
