If you think your life sucks, you’re absolutely right. But not for the reason you would think. It’s not because your malicious boss continuously gives you the most meaningless projects. It’s not because your bank account balance is lower than it’s ever been. And it’s not because your mother-in-law is constantly out to get you. The reason your life sucks is actually you.

Why You Are The Reason Your Life Sucks

If you are constantly focusing on the negative aspects of your life and desperately looking for someone or something to blame, have a look in the mirror. The culprit is you, my friend. And here’s why.

Studies show that the more you focus on the negative in life, the more negative your life becomes. As you are more optimistic about your life and what it has in store for you, you have more potential to find opportunities and the motivation to succeed. Not only that but having an optimistic outlook on life has also shown to improve relationships as well as emotional and physical health. (1, 2)

That being said, it stands to reason that having a “my life sucks” kind of attitude is a major contributor to the amount of suck in your life. If you choose to live with this type of mindset, there is no one and nothing else that deserves the blame for your pathetic life. You are the reason your life sucks, and accepting this fact is the first step to turning your life around.

How To Stop Being The Reason Your Life Sucks

Now, there’s obviously nothing you can do to completely avoid life’s tragedies. Bad things happen to everyone, no matter how much you choose to smile or frown about it. But while you can’t control everything that happens in your life, there are certain things that are completely within your control. Focusing on these things is the key to helping reduce the suck in your life.

    • Don’t pass the buck – Even in situations that you can’t directly change, shaking your fist at someone won’t make it any better. If you’re constantly blaming others for your bad situation you’ll never challenge yourself to actually do something about it.
    • Life doesn’t owe you anything – When it comes right down to it, you really aren’t entitled to anything in life. Not money, friends, work, health, or happiness. If you want something, you have to make it happen.
    • Keep pushing forward – When life is at its hardest and every fiber of your being is telling you to give up and complain, keep going. Those critical moments are often where true change happens. People don’t usually grow when they are comfortable. If you become discouraged too soon you’ll never know what success could have been found.
    • Replace negative thoughts with positive ones – The best way to rid your life of negative thoughts is to replace them with positive ones. Research has shown that this practice reduces worry and anxiety. (3)
    • Be grateful – There is real power in gratitude. Choosing to focus on the positives in your life will brighten your mood while also benefiting those around you. (4) Appreciate the little things like the sun on your face, a bird chirping, or even wind rustling the trees.

The Hard Truth

Whether you were looking for it or not, I’m here to give you some brutal honesty. You are the reason your life sucks. And if your life doesn’t suck, congratulations, you’re the reason for that too! But if it really does suck, on the bright side this also means you are the only thing standing in the way of making it better. So instead of dwelling on how horrible your life is, focus on the good in the world and all around you. Chances are you will find that your life really isn’t as bad as you thought it was, and it’s full of opportunities to make it better.
