With the cold weather coming, our bodies are at their most vulnerable to pain and disease. The cold air dries out our skin, making it itchy and flaky and very uncomfortable. Joint and muscle pain is a common problem in the winter, and can be worsened by weakened immune systems. But there are ways to protect yourself this winter, keeping you healthy and happy!

Coconut-Peppermint Body Butter

This combination of coconut and peppermint oil is just what a body needs during the winter months. Full of all natural ingredients, this body butter will not fill your body with toxins like most conventional beauty products and it works just as good if not better!

You’ll need:

  • ½ cup of organic shea butter
  • ½ cup of organic cocoa or mango butter
  • ½ cup of organic raw coconut oil
  • ½ cup of an organic light oil like almond, olive or jajoba
  • 10-30 drops of peppermint essential oil (this makes it smell like the holidays!)

In a double boiler or glass bowl, combine all the ingredients except for the essential oils. If you’re using a double boiler, bring it to a medium heat and melt all the ingredients. If you don’t have one, bring a pot of water to a boil, and place the glass bowl over it, trapping the steam. Stir until the ingredients are melted and then remove it from the heat to cool slightly.

Once it has reached room temperature, place it in the fridge and let it cool for about an hour or until it hardens, but is still pliable. This may take more or less time depending on what container it is in. Once it’s hardened slightly, add the essential oil and use a hand mixer to whip it for ten minutes until it is fluffy.

You can store it in a glass jar and use it like a regular lotion or body butter. The mixture may melt if your home is kept above 75 degrees, so it would be best left in the fridge. If not, it’ll will stay whipped and fluffy!

Benefits Of Coconut And Peppermint Oil

Coconut oil has a wealth of health benefits for your entire body. It is both antibacterial and antifungal, and in studies it has been found to speed the healing of wounds when applied topically. This is great for keeping your skin healthy and keeping bacteria and viruses out of your body. And of course, it is a great moisturizer. In a human study it was found to be effective in increasing hydration and reducing water loss in seriously dry skin.

Peppermint oil is also great for your skin. It is also antifungal, protecting your skin from infection. It has also been found to reduce pain, and is great when applied topically to aching joints and muscles. Not to mention that it increases blood flow, so applying it to your skin will keep it healthy and strong.

Try this great combo of coconut and peppermint oil and protect your skin from the harshness of winter today!
