5 Essential Oil Combinations For Homemade Deodorants

5 Essential Oil Combinations For Homemade Deodorants

If you’re thinking about making your own deodorant you’re not alone. Lots of Americans are making the switch to homemade deodorants and with good reason. Your underarms have been hit too hard for too long.

Store bought deodorants and antiperspirants contain aluminum, which has been linked to breast cancer. Our underarms are highly susceptible because they absorb much of what is put on them. So why not just start making your own already?

Something Doesn’t Smell Right

Maybe you’ve got a particular smell. Maybe it took you a while to find the brand of deodorant you’re using. Maybe this one doesn’t make your skin itchy, doesn’t give you a rash, or doesn’t do what most – if not all – of the other ones do.

I’ve found a recipe to make your own deodorant with only 4 ingredients, most of which you probably already have. What are these ingredients?

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup arrowroot powder
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp essential oil

When you make your own deodorant, you get to choose your benefits. The oil, powder, and baking soda are all necessities; the essential oils are necessary as well, but you can add whichever you’d like and get different benefits from each.

How Do I Make Homemade Deodorant?

Here are the basic steps:

  1. Melt the coconut oil down to a liquid state.
  1. Mix in essential oil. *
  1. Add in arrowroot powder and baking soda and mix until smooth.
  1. Pour into an airtight jar or container, and apply with your fingers or a small spatula.

When the coconut oil sets (after some time) the deodorant will be in a semi-solid state. This deodorant won’t have the same antiperspirant properties that some deodorants have, but it will keep you smelling good all day with only minimal use. That’s why this deodorant will last for a long time!

Which Oils Are Essential?

The essential oils in all these mixes are: antimicrobial, antibacterial, antiseptic, astringent, and anti-inflammatory. All the oils chosen have some degree of these properties. Some of the oils were chosen more for smell than for health.
* Essential Oils #1:

Add a drop or two of each oil until you’ve got ¼ teaspoon of oil.

  • lemon
  • grapefruit
  • geranium
  • lime
  • cypress
  • lavender
  • clove
  • oregano

Cypress and Geranium are natural deodorizes. Clove bud is an antioxidant and has anti-aging properties. Grapefruit tones the skin and lemon removes toxins.

Essential Oils #2:

This was originally titled the “General/ All Purpose” mix. Frankincense is an anti-inflammatory, natural stress reliever, and helps with arthritis as well as colds and coughs. Ylang ylang essential oil has a pleasant smell and immune strengthening properties.

Essential Oils #3:

  • 5 drops cedarwood
  • 5 drops geranium
  • 4 drops tea tree
  • 3 drops patchouli

This mix was called “The Original” presumably because the natural smell, and it’s anti-fungal, antiseptic properties. Cedarwood has long been used to clear oily skin, tea tree oil helps keep and maintain healthy skin, and patchouli has a strong smell that covers up bad body odor.

Essential Oils #4:

  • 10 drops lavender
  • 4 drops lemon
  • 3 drops rosemary

“The Lavender Blend” will have you smelling lovely. This blend focuses on smelling good and feeling even better. Not to say that you won’t smell amazing, but these aromatics are also amazing relaxants that will have you feeling calm and thinking straight in no time.

Essential Oils #5:

As previously mentioned, frankincense is a natural stress reliever. Sandalwood has many of the same properties, but also works great as a deodorant because of its pleasant smell.

Take a look in your medicine cabinet, and use whichever essential oils you’ve got. Hone in on your favorite combination, and stick to your recipe! You’ll have an unique, amazing smell that friends will ask about!

Better than being asked about a terrible smell.
