Man Loses Feeling In His Legs And Nearly Dies Due To Colossal Poop

By Emilyn Gil

Everyone does it, but generally no one likes to talk about it. You guessed it! Poop.

However awkward it may be to bring it up, it’s very important to bring intestinal issues to your doctor if there are any, because certain bowel conditions can actually be very dangerous.

One man had to learn that the hard way.

The Colossal Poop Situation

The man was 53 years old, and showed up in the emergency room with swelling, nausea, and abdominal pain that had lasted three days.

The most surprising symptom however was the pain in his right leg. He had been unable to move it for an entire day, and the doctors found that the leg was cold with no palpable pulse.

Upon further examination, the doctors revealed that he had impacted stools, fecal impaction, and an increased pressure in the abdomen. In short, he just really needed to poop.

The fecal matter was so backed up, so much that it was putting pressure on his large intestine and right iliac artery, causing the pain and paralysis in his leg. They decided surgery was the best solution.

The doctors successfully removed 2 liters of feces, and the man was sent to the intensive care unit for further recovery. After 13 days he was finally able to walk again.

Although the doctors were unable to find the original cause for this man’s condition, we are simply glad that he was able to recover.

The Signs Of Constipation

Constipation can be extremely dangerous, as you can see. However, generally it is not nearly this severe.

You may be constipated if:

  • Your stool is hard and dry
  • Bowel movements are painful and difficult to pass
  • You have fewer than 3 bowel movements per week.
  • You feel that not all stool has passed

If you are unable to relieve symptoms with self care or a stool softener from the drug store, see your doctor to get the proper treatment. (1, 2)

Home Remedies For Regularity

1. Eat High Fiber Foods

Foods that are high in fiber can prevent constipation and keep you regular. Adults should be getting anywhere from 25 to 31 grams of fiber a day.

Some good high fiber foods include:

  • Fruits (berries, pears, oranges, and apples with skin)
  • Vegetables (broccoli, green peas, collard greens, and carrots)
  • Whole grains (oatmeal and bran flake cereals)
  • Legumes (lentils, black beans, chickpeas and kidney beans)
  • Nuts (peanuts, pecans, and almonds) (3, 4, 5)

2. Drink Plenty Of Water

Water is extremely important when it comes to preventing constipation. If you are dehydrated your body will start taking water anywhere it can get it, including from your stool. So staying hydrated is essential. Liquids can make your stools much softer and easier to pass. (5)

3. Exercise

Sometimes inactivity can affect constipation. Make sure to get a good 30 minutes of physical activity every day to prevent constipation. Remember, the best kind of exercise is the one you like the most! So get creative with tennis, yoga, swimming, running, weight lifting, hiking, you name it. (4)

Constipation is never fun, especially if it leads to more serious conditions. Make sure to eat healthy, high fiber foods, get plenty of exercise and stay hydrated in order to avoid constipation as much as possible! Should you have issues, however, seek medical attention.
