Nurse Sneaks into Patient’s Room, Seconds Later Camera Catches Her Kind Gesture

In an endless sea of bad news and sad stories, sometimes we are graced with a drop of joy that quietly ripples its way through the chaos and into our hearts. Today, the story of Jeremiah Nichol and his grandmother is one of those drops that is bringing joy to countless families.

The Story of Jeremiah Nichol, His Grandma, and a Nurse

Jeremiah’s grandmother, Helen, had been in the hospital for a while. But he and his family would visit to support and simply be present for her final days. Helen needed help with everything and while it’s unfortunate to say, bedside manner can sometimes fall to the wayside when patients “can’t be helped.”

Thankfully, a nurse named Isabelle at Life Care in Seneca, Kansas doesn’t share the belief that patients cannot be helped. In fact, when Isabelle found out that Jeremiah’s grandma didn’t have long to live, she snuck into Helen’s room and asked one question: I’m gonna sing for you, is that all right?

You can listen to nurse Isabelle’s angelic voice below:

Getting the OK, Isabelle held and stroked Helen’s hand as she sang “He Walks with Me” by American singer and songwriter Merle Haggard:

“I come to the garden alone
While the dew is still on roses
And the voice I hear falling
On my ear the son of God discloses

And He walks with me and He talks with me
And He tells me I am His own
And the joy we share as we tarry there
None other has ever known

He speaks and the sound of His voice
Is so sweet the birds hush their singing
And the melody that He gave to me
Within my heart is ringing

And He walks with me and He talks with me
And He tells me I am His own
And the joy we share as we tarry there
None other has ever known”

This is what Jeremiah had to say about Isabelle’s beautifully kind gesture:

Please share…The daily compassion of unknown numbers of good health care workers goes unnoticed by many. Thank you for the gifts you share and the love for patients you bestow. Thank you, Isabelle, for being a comforting voice in our family. Best wishes to you and the staff at Life Care in Seneca KS. Rest in Peace Grandma Helen. We love you.

What’s so special about this video is that we will never know what Helen was thinking as Isabelle’s voice filled the room. One thing you can bet, though, is that it filled Helen with more peace and painlessness than any medication could. That’s what Isabelle recognizes…

The Importance of Holistic Wellness

Of course, someone battling disease is engaged in a very physical, bodily fight. However, people often fail to acknowledge how emotionally draining it can be. Keeping your body and immune system strong is important, but so is your heart and mind.

Here’s how you can show your loved one you love them in their final days:

1. Visit often.

It’s not always easy with such busy schedules, but making the effort won’t go unnoticed. Sometimes, all someone needs is some company.

2. Communicate.

Relationship is crucial for longevity and happiness. Whether your catching up, sharing stories from the past, or simply being in the room with them, communication (verbal and non-verbal) keeps their brain stimulated and even distracted from pain they may be experiencing.

3. Help foster their independence.

Dignity is hard to part with and with it, usually goes their independence. So, even if your loved one isn’t physically able to do something, try to help them in a way that gives them a sense that they are still capable.

4. Tell them you love them.

Trust us. You do not want that regret.

5. Don’t assume you should know what to do.

You can read all the books and take all the classes, but nothing will ever prepare you for someone’s death. Everyone will be trying to cope with the impending loss, but it’s these moments that usually bring family and friends closer together.

It’s difficult to make sure friends, families, nurses, and doctors are meeting these patient needs in the midst of the busyness of overcrowded hospitals. But, hopefully stories like the one above inspires in you a sense of hope that it’s possible. Because if there is one thing that this world needs to go viral…it’s stories like this one. It’s love.
